We booked 6 nights at the Beachcomber Island Resort over Christmas and left just before New Years Eve with 3 other friends. We're all in our mid-20's and we shared a Beachfront Bure.
In total we spent about 15 days in Fiji and I have to say, Beachcomber was the highlight of our trip. We even booked a day trip once we were staying in Denarau because we missed it so much.
The white sandy beaches of Beachcomber Island are much better than the mainland (a lesson we learned the hard way) and the coral and sea-life are just incredible. If you are at the Beachcomber, do as many activities as you can. A highlight for us was the Sea Trek (guided walking tour under the sea), Banana Boating and deep sea fishing. We caught a 15 kilo Spanish Mackeral!
In terms of accommodation, it's not luxary by any stretch of the imagination compared to some of the 5 or 4 star resorts on the mainland. There's no air conditioning but who cares! You are in paradise. I can't really talk about the dorms as we didn't stay in them but from what I heard, they are not too bad.
The beachfront bures were great but not cheap by any means. But price seemed reasonable considering we had the best room on such a small ideallic island. We had a hammock right outside our room that we spent hours in and a beach right infront of us.
The partying was hit and miss as it all depended on who was at the resort at the time. But when things really got rolling, we had an absolute blast. The bar staff were friendly and efficient compared to other resorts who were REALLY effected by "Fiji Time". In terms of drink prices, Beachcomber wasn't at all too bad. It was more expensive than most backpacker places but considering everything needed to be shipped and all their electricity was powered by a generator, it seemed quite reasonable. 6 nights of intense drinking and activities only cost us each what we would normally spend over two nights of similar debauchery in Sydney.
The snack bar that provided take away food like hot chips and burgers was dismal but lunch and dinner was quite nice. I definitely got tired of the food after 6 nights and got a bit of a belly ache from eating curry every lunch.
Would I recommend this place to other people? Definitely.
It is more suitable for 18 - 30 year olds who like to drink and be around other young like-minded folk. But what's awesome about this place is that after a big night, you wake up to a pristine beach and gorgeous water.
