“"Great Fun"”
Reviewed April 8, 2013

Enjoyed every minute of it. Don't arrive expecting restaurants and hotel standard accommodation. They don't sell it as being that, however, the rooms are very good value and perfectly adequate. The food is fine, but the main thing is the beauty of the island and the friendliness of the staff. It is great fun to go for a few days. Go! James

Bula James,
We are pleased to receive your positive feedback and that you and your friends enjoyed your stay at Beachcomber. Your brief review pretty much sums up all that is Beachcomber, the beauty of the island, the friendliness of the staff etc.
Out of the many of thousands of guests who pass through Beachcomber each week as house guests or day trippers we are very happy that the vast majority love Beachcomber for what it is. Beachcomber is a spectacular island resort destination with a lot to offer, which includes a variety of accommodation styles and prices and a buffet that caters for all tastes.
Thanks for visiting and we hope you return again.

We had a great time. The rooms are clean and the people were friendly. One of the best views around. We met alot of people from all over. The weather was perfect too. It is far enough away from the roudy spring breakers, and close enough for other activities.

Room Tip: The kitchen was a great feature. Saved us lots of money on food.

So ive read a few negative reviews recently and was rather surprised! I went here for my bday with my best friend and loved everything about it.

Staff were amazing very welcoming and accommodating. They got to know us and made our stay very personalised.

Ok rooms are on the older scale of resorts but I love that feel! Ur on a gorgeous island with great views why would you want a tv or anything like that!

Food waa great but no I didnt like the timw length for meals.

Drinks were cheap and yummy!

We definately got the party feel, we had great people there the same time and hav made long lasting friends!

For two of us who drank heavily pretty much every night wenr on tours and spent money on the islans only spent FD $1600 for 7 nights which converted to aussie dollars only 400 each!!!

Have my holiday booked for here again in May this time with my fiance. ..cant wait!!!

My friend and I decided to spend one night at Beachcombers since we heard it was a party island and we were looking to have a bit of fun. NOT THE CASE.. I had far more fun at the other resorts (which had better music / better and cheaper drinks / better atmosphere).

You should avoid this place for the following reasons:

1. HORRIBLE FOOD (Me and 6 other people got food poisoning here)! They require you to have buy their meal plan and the hours for meals are inflexible and only one hour for all meals (unlike other resorts - i.e. at Blue Lagoon breakfast was from 7:30 am to 10 am whereas a beachcomber it was only from 8 am to 9 am). The food was SO awful compared to all the other resorts (one of the girls we met was a vegetarian and there were no vegetarian dishes available for her so she was basically eating toast the entire time).

2. They turn off ALL water between midnight to 6:30 am which NO ONE told us about until it was past midnight and there was no water to brush our teeth with. The worst was the fact that they DID NOT tell us ahead of time. Awful service.

3. You are in a 120 person dorm!! 120!! It was THE WORST sleep I've gotten. There are also not doors in this ONE BIG DORM so there were flies and mosquitos everywhere. I don't know how long your deet / insect repellent will last but my 99% deet wore off and I was still bitten and uncomfortably itchy.

4. If you are in the dorm, there is really no where to charge your phone / camera / electronics (there was one outlet next to the fan for 60 people).

5. They provide locked storage underneath the bunk beds, but it's filled with bugs and I was uncomfortable locking my backpack there.

It was just an awful experience!! Don't waste your time here!! There are so so so many beautiful islands, why waste your time and money here?!?

Room Tip: Get a room at a different resort.

Bula,
Thank you for taking the time to post your review. Potential guests can rest assured of the following that Beachcomber plays music to accommodate all tastes and age groups. There is a big difference between the music played during the day when day trippers are present and what is played at night. As a whole, bar prices at Beachcomber are cheap for an island resort and the vast majority of guests acknowledge this.
There is a great deal of flexibility with meals and as per previous feedback, we are more than happy to accommodate vegetarian or other dietary requirements.
It is very seldom that water is turned off and on the rare occasion that it is turned off due to operational requirements, guests are advised before hand so that individual needs can be prepared for and accommodated.
The Grand Dorm at Beachcomber accommodates 84 persons and is a popular meeting place for many guests that love the open plan style. Beachcomber has systems in place for the control of mosquitoes and it is very seldom that anyone is troubled by them.
Should any future guests require electronic devices charged during their stay we are more than happy to do it at the front office and our staff will gladly assist with this or any other needs for that matter.

where to begin
we will start with the good points
the staff where lovely
the manager was extremely helpful at getting us off the island
I would say its good only for a day trip
now for the bad
we arrive on the island got taken to our room only to discover the toilet didn't flush
we changed to another bure and that toilet was marginally better if you think that smelly
brown water is sufficient
the water pressure was not good it takes you a good part of your day to shower and that chlorine made you so fresh and clean
You couldn't drink the water and naturally you had to pay for water to drink
There was no aircon or tv, just fans, which were ok at night but certainly didn't cut it during the day
........everything in the bure seemed dirty, our bathroom light switch was half black from dirty fingers that had never been cleaned. The plastic cups in the fridge were also dirty
Ok now for the food
Fill up on breakfast unless you like curry every single day for lunch. There is no juice at breakfast. Dinner was not consistent, we had 1 good meal there, everything else was overcooked and tough. You must line up for food and have it slapped on your plate like living in an orphanage.
Don't go on the safari trip.
We went on a rickety boat that kept stalling. It took over an hour to get to the village. When we got there we had to trek half way around the island because the tide was out. We were asked for a donation at the school and again after the kava ceremony. The kava tasted like watered down soy milk. After trekking back around the island to the boat we were all very hot and thirsty, luckily, the crew brought an esky full of ice cold drinks - they were charging $5 a can! The trip cost $80 per person and you got no lunch or drinks and we left at 10am and returned at 4.30pm!!
If you are reading this and think our expectations were too high, you are wrong, we weren't expecting luxury by any means.
After we were transferred to the sister resort at anchorage, life was sweet.

Room Tip: Just go to anchorage and daytrip to beachcomber

Bula,
Thank you for taking time to post your review.
Whilst it appears that overall you haven't enjoyed your stay at Beachcomber there are some points I would like to clarify for potential guests. Out of environmental stewardship, Beachcomber has its own water treatment plant that treats waste water into grey water for use in the sewerage system. The potable water at Beachcomber passes all WHO, US EPA, NZMOH and local guidelines for drinking and it is independently checked on a regular basis.
As an island based resort that tries to keep the accommodation 'traditional', aircon and TV are not consistent with enjoying everything that Beachcomber Island has to offer.
There has been a Chef at Beachcomber now for over a month and as a whole we are getting very positive feedback on the variety and quality of the food.
Beachcomber continues to meet or exceed the expectations of the vast majority of guests that come to the island and we welcome future or potential guests to try the best destination in the Mamanucas.

Overall we were happy with our stay. It is definetly a place for younger drinking people but its not a wild party by any stretch. My biggest concern was about food as we are vegetarians. I can tell you the food and chef were a big bright spot. The chef made a special vegetarian dinner for us every night and it was tasty and fresh. Just tell the staff from day one your vege and they will set you up.

Although it's hard to go wrong with any of the Fiji island resorts, I would stay clear of this one for a while. It's pretty clear Beachcomber knows they have a problem and the owner doesn't really care about fixing it. It's known as the party island, maybe just go on a liquid diet and stay just one night - for all the non party people it would makes sense to skip it.

So, we met a guy further down the chain of islands who had not been able to eat since Beachcomber, three days of not eating since. Apparently he had serious issues with the food quality there before he got sick. Could have been from anywhere, right? Ran into a few other people at our resort that also coincidently came from Beachcomber that were also sick. Mentioned it to one of the workers who has been on the islands for a long time, he said it has probably been hundreds that have come there sick after Beachcombers.

So we cancelled our reservation to stay there for the one night and just went back to the mainland. We got back home from our vacation and there was a pending charge for Beachcomber!! It's not only that they don't care, it's that the owner is taking advantage of people on purpose. Fail.

Bula,
Thank you for taking the time to post your review. Whilst there is some negative feedback from guests shortly after the cyclone, there has been an enormous amount of work done since then. Most of the coral has been removed from the beach, the pool is now back in action and the rest of the infrastructure has been restored to how it was prior to the cyclone.
We have had a Chef on Beachcomber for several weeks now and is again one of the best island buffets around. The most recent review is complimentary towards the food at Beachcomber and should be used as a guide for potential guests.
The Sunset Wing is nearly complete and this offers 16 brand new rooms with a beautiful view out over the ocean and amazing sunsets.
With recent rain, most of the plants are starting to green and leaf again and Beachcomber is once again the picture postcard island destination.
