“I didn't want to leave...”

We just came back from a fantastic holiday at this eco-friendly resort. Matava is off the beaten track and if you are looking for a place where you can relax completely without myriads of other tourists, this is the place to be. The staff is very friendly and welcoming, there are opportunities to experience the Fijian lifestyle (village visits, Kava ceremony etc; the waterfall shouldn't be missed) and some superb diving (beautiful corals, sharks, turtles, manta rays, sea snakes etc.).
The bures are clean and comfortable, but it seemd to depend which one you had. Ours (oceanview) had solar panels for electricity to provide light for reading at night and gas-heated hot water, but other bures had no electricity (oil lamps) and unreliable hot water. So don't expect too much luxury, it's an eco-resort after all.
Meals were a great experience, always a time to catch up with the other guests in a sort of family atmosphere. Food was good and plentiful. We were only a little disappointed because we expected a lot more seafood which we only got when the fishing was successful (which wasn't very often).
And as in the other review: Maggie definitely makes this place! ;-)

  • Liked — location, diving, staff
  • Disliked — not much seafood on the menu
  • Tips/Secrets — awesome diving! if you're looking for luxury, don't go.

I was disappointed with the Matava Resort. It is portrayed as a destination with plenty of activities however, there is NO BEACH at Matava. One is informed upon arrival that they can swim or kayak to an island opposite the resort. Strong currents can prevent kayakers and swimmers alike from doing this. With NO BEACH, you will have to PAY to be taken to destinations in order to swim or snorkel. This can get very expensive. There are also no outside areas with sunchairs/hammocks etc. in which to relax or sunbake.

The amenities in the bures are not clean. It is recommended that guests shower with thongs on.

It is mentioned that solar panels provide electricity at the resort. However, there is NO ELECTRICITY in the bures. Guests are privided with kerosene lamps for a light source.

Matava is a hidden gem. This rustic property offers a wonderful fijian experience. The Bures are very large and have ample hot water. The decorations are sparse but I understand they are working on sprucing them up a bit. The staff is wonderful, the food outstanding and the diving top notch. The hour long boat ride to the resort from the air strip is somewhat uncomfortable but well worth the trip. The trekk to the waterfalls is not to be missed!

  • Liked — Authentic Fijian experience, dive shop on site
  • Disliked — Sparce room furnishings
  • Tips/Secrets — If you don't like jungle and bugs, you won't like Matava

My husband and I got married at Matava in June 2006. Despite torrential rain during most of our 10 day stay, we had a fantastic time! From landing strip on Kandavu, you are taken to a small boat and transferred to the resort - this can take between 45 minutes and 5 hours (depending on weather!) We took about 50 mins. While it is called a resort, the Matava is eco-friendly and small, which means little electricity, hot water warmed by gas or the sun, no air conditioning, and getting friendly with local wildlife and insects every once and a while.

However, the food is fresh, organic and grown on site, with meals being taken 'family style' along with other guests and tailored to dietary need. The staff are generous, friendly and entertaining; accomodation is superb in private bure, and the diving is wonderful - manta, shark, turtle - despite having to stay inside reef due to weather conditions. If you dont dive, there are plenty of other activites. Although if it is raining, you may get a bit bored if you are not prepared to get soaked thru! Take a good book.

If you are after a relaxing and peaceful place to stay where you will be warmly welcomed, I would certainly reccomend the Matava. We had a wonderful time, want to go back and I'm a bit loathed to write such a praising review in case too many other people find it! If you do decide to go, say 'Hi' to Maggie for us - he makes the place.

  • Liked — Location!
  • Disliked — Reliance on sun to heat water - overcast alot when we were there - brr!
  • Tips/Secrets — If you dont like talking to strangers, this is not the place for you.
