“Charming, relaxing, historic”
Reviewed July 16, 2013 via mobile

This resort has it all. Golf, tennis, sailboats, spa. It's charming! I've stayed here a few times. If you want a GREAT massage and spa experience, this is the place. (Claudia was wonderful) Set aside plenty of time to enjoy the quiet room, sauna, steam room. Aaaaaaah! The main building has large rooms. They are paneling and have a lodge feel. If you want a more luxurious "hotel" experience, request the spa building rooms. Explore the beautiful grounds. Plenty of hammocks, benches, swings. many places to sit and enjoy a book or just gaze at the water. You will want to stay forever.

This hotel is super nice with excellent service. We were provided with excellent service from the time we arrived until check out. The breakfast is GREAT!! The only time we left the resort was for horse back riding. There's also a lot of complimentary activities, like bicycles, kayak, etc. We definitely will return.

This hotel is probably one of our favorite places in the world. We spent the first part of our honeymoon here, and come back every year. This hotel is a part of Alabama history. It feels like relaxation in brick and mortar form, full of the Bay lifestyle. The old part of the hotel is our favorite. The building is rustic and charming, and the grounds are equally beautiful. The service is generally very good. The food is mostly fantastic. We've never tried the Grand Dining Room, but it appears to be respected for culinary expertise. The Saltwater Grill is very good, but you might find equally good food in town for a little less $. The Grand Breakfast buffet is the meal you need to eat at the hotel. The omelet station with fresh crab meat, the conecuh sausage, and the massive variety and deliciousness of the other food available overwhelms the senses. Also, the breakfast menu offers some of the best food I've ever put in my mouth. The Southern Eggs Benedict that include crab cakes is one of the best meals I've ever had. The room service food is also excellent. There's a resort fee, but it includes access to bikes, water sports, and other things I'm not aware of. The pool area is fantastic - there's a large freshwater pool, a kids area, a saltwater pool, and several hot tubs. The marina is especially pretty, and offers a romantic view if you end up in the Spa building. We've never visited the Spa, but it looks very nice. Again, the location, hotel, and staff make for a stay you won't soon forget. We love the Grand and look forward to many happy times there in the future.

Our room faced the Mobile Bay. We had a balcony with rocking chairs, all shaded by giant oak trees. We sat on the balcony enjoying the view of the water and a gorgeous sunset. The beautifully landscaped property contains many areas to sit and enjoy the flowers, ponds, gardens and ducks. There is a golf course and a spa for those who don't want to just sit and enjoy it all.The grandchildren enjoyed the outdoor pools, the sandy beach, and riding bicycles. They also fished off the pier (poles and bait provided). A good time was had by all!

Room Tip: Ask for a water front room. One building (Marina) has parking underneath it and is very convenient.

From check-in to departure, we had a great trip. It was a little confusing at first to get to our room until we realized the map they gave us at check in showed everything more spread out than it was. The pool is great at the Grand, but as Marriott guests, you also access to The Colony - a swim and tennis club a couple of miles away. The Colony has a small lazy river, a larger slide, and several water activities including kayaks and paddleboards. Back at the Grand, we used the complimentary bikes and road across the street and around the golf course. My son wanted to use the fishing equipment on the pier and that was a small disappointment. Cane poles, with several that did not have hooks or and tackle for us to repiar them. On the positive side, had you brought your own rod and reel, the resort did have a cooler with iced down squid for bait. Another little disappointment was the seashell search on the beach. Mainly for toddlers. The resort also has a large outdoor putting green, four horseshoe pits, croquet, and several swings to just enjoy the view and the breeze. Don't forget to take advantage of the complimentary coffee bar in the mornings from 6-8.

Room Tip: Since we had a bay view, I would obviously recommend it. Having only been there once, I can't s...

We'd heard about this hotel for years, and had even driven by it before. We can't wait to plan our next visit there! The grounds are absolutely beautiful, and there is so much to do. It's perfect for a family or even for a romantic getaway. The staff is very friendly & helpful. I believe that every room has a balcony, and our room was in the spa building, with a beautiful & quiet view of the marina. We had rocking chairs on the balcony, too, which I enjoyed.
The room was very comfortable with a very roomy & nice bathroom. Our bed was extremely comfortable, and we had a fridge, too.
We weren't able to enjoy the spa, but hope to do that next time, as it looked beautiful.
We stayed the 1st night as a couple, and then had our son with us the next night, so we were able to take advantage of both benefits of a family or a romantic getaway. My husband and I loved the Birdcage Lounge and the wonderful drinks and appetizers there. We unfortunately only caught a little of the live music as it shut down before midnight.
The pool is beautiful and they also had a the biggest hot tub I've never seen. We enjoyed everything! Our son especially liked the water slide. And the beach was heavenly. They have a multitude of lounge/beach chairs by the pool and the beach area. Also complimentary are bicycles (for an hour free of charge), kayaks, & hobie cats. They also have a great staff, who will get you drinks or food by the pool. And I was very impressed with the pool menu, as they had lots of very healthy options. Also very impressive to me is the environmental friendliness of this hotel.
We took a bike ride up the coast and saw some of the most beautiful houses we've seen, whose backyards face the bay beach.
We also went into town, Fairhope, and went antique shopping and had breakfast and lunch. We also saw the town's little museum, which was very interesting.
This area is absolutely beautiful, and different than what I imagined Alabama to be. It's very charming, and the people are so friendly and nice. I can't wait to plan another trip here. It was beautiful, relaxing, and also offered lots to do.
1 of my favorite things was taking a nap in a hammock facing the bay...perfection!
We didn't take advantage of the breakfast buffet, which we heard a lot about. Instead, we grabbed coffee & tea in the to-go shop, and also bagels and pastries, which we enjoyed at 1 of the plentiful tables outside facing the bay.
Also a recommendation is attending the daily cannon firing with a brief history, and complimentary tea & snacks which occurs every day at 4 pm. Very cool!
My son and husband also enjoyed playing horseshoes, the mini golf course, and croquet. So nice!
We did have dinner at the Saltwater Grill, located on the property, and it was wonderful. We had mainly seafood dishes. I had a wonderful grilled amberjack. The ingredients they use are local, and again, they are big on the environment, which is something that personally means a lot to me.
I highly recommend this hotel and can't wait to go back!

Room Tip: We stayed in the spa building, and had a beautiful and quiet view of the marina, and was able to enj...

We arrived on a Sunday afternoon for a two night getaway. We did have a line to check in but it moved rather quickly. The resort was wonderful. We enjoyed the adult pool with wait staff and also the numerous swings. We also enjoyed the gym which has a great view and the spa. There was lots to do and no need to leave the resort. It was a perfect place to unwind. The restaurant was a little pricey but Bucky's Lounge was more reasonable and became a piano bar late in the evening. Overall great experience.

Room Tip: If you like more modern surroundings, choose a room in the Spa building. The main building is histo...
