“A Great History and a Marriott Too”
Reviewed May 1, 2013

Well you get a lot of both - history, and the Marriott experience. The place is amazing and the Marriott Corp is careful to preserve the history of the Grand Hotel and the adjoining golf courses, which incudes a Confederate Rest Cemetery. The original hotel was a hospital for Confederate soldiers who fought in the Civil War. It is a large resort with many out buildings. We were in the North House building which is attached to the main reception area and restaurants. Request that because it's close to the pool and beach. It's a great place for families, golfers, and business meetings. It is part of the Robert Trent Jones Trail in Alabama. This was our first stop on a week long trip on the Trail. Lakewood Country Club next door was a nice start to our trip. We loved the courses. My only gripe is that it is a big resort and feels that way. Food and drink are way overpriced. Service can be spotty as I feel they have cut back on staff. They have rigid schedules for service at the pool for food. It's a Marriott and acts like it. Love the history of the place in spite of that.

My husband and I just returned from a convention at the Grand Hotel in Point Clear. We were so impressed with the resort and were overwhelmed by the size of the property. We definitely did not stay long enough to enjoy all the amenities. The location is beautiful and we look forward to returning!

This is our second stay at the Grand Hotel in Point Clear. (me, wife, daughter 7) We stayed 3 nights 4/18 - 4/21. This time we stayed in an executive suite in the Spa Building. The cost was double, but we really enjoyed having our own bedroom.
The hotel has a ton of history and character. We enjoyed everything from the pool/pool bar, spa, to the on site restaurants. We found the on site restaurants to be better and just as reasonable as the local restaurants in Fairhope. There are plenty of organized activities, i.e. tea time, sea shell hunts, bike rides, canon firing etc.
Feel free to message me w/ any question.

What a wonderful surprise!! This magnificent property sits on a point out in Mobile Bay and the grounds are spectacular. The check and and staff were so gracious and welcoming. The history of the property is interesting and the lobby and common areas have a lovely feel to them of quality and tradition. We enjoyed complimentary tea and scones and went to our room which was tastefully designed and decorated with good furnishings and fabrics (I am an interior designer!).
The fresh cut flowers in the common areas were extraordinary.

We had a lovely view. We took a walk and ended up fishing off the terrific pier with the poles and bait provided for guests. We didn't catch anything, but we sure had fun trying.

Dinner in the restaurant did not disappoint. The manager was lovely and accommodating and our server was a delightful young lady who bent over backwards to give us an incredible experience. We had crab cakes--perfection! Rack of lamb--superb! Many other sides and appetizers, all fabulous. The bread and coffee were excellent, two things restaurants can save money on---We always say if the bread and coffee are good the rest will be too--and voila!
We skipped dessert and took an after dinner drink to the bar and listened to the piano player then headed out to sit around a fire pit. We met a wonderful couple from Mobile and ended up talking until 1am!

We took a walk along the water on sidewalk/boardwalk to see all the charming homes and their docks on the bay the next morning before breakfast. Such fun!

After staying in this beautiful resort for one night, I am bound and determined to return and to make it a tradition for my family!!

I felt like i had been away for a week---a true retreat!!

Fantastic outside pool with zero entry, waterfalls, fountains, huge slide. Just wish the weather was warm enough to play. So swam in large clean inside pool. Rooms was Marriott quality and clean. Fun coffee and cookies each afternoon in lobby. Will return.

I rarely post reviews, but wanted to share my experience with this hotel. As others have stated, we arrived a couple hours early knowing the room may not be ready and sure enough, the front desk explained the main building where our room was located is always late to get cleaned. So we figured no problem and proceeded to check out the property. After hitting the pool bar for a couple beers, we walked the entire property and admired the beautiful location. Since the front desk had not called my cell yet and 2 hours had past (it was now 3:15 pm), we checked in for a status update and got the same response... "you have a great room location and we would hate to move you out the main building, please check back around 4". And on cue our room was magically done right at 4.
So we gather our luggage and head to our room. We were on the first floor in the main building right the west most end. So our room had a fabulous view of Mobile Bay from 2 side since it was on a corner, along with being split into 2 seperate spaces... the sitting room with a sofa and TV, then you entered the sleeping area. My first impression was quickly overcome by the bouncing/ squeaking floor of the seating area, which was also sloped. It bounced so much that anything sitting on the TV credenza would fall on the floor if near the edge. After the wait and being a busy weekend, we just dealt with the floor issue. But then the bathroom was explored and I could not believe the size and configuration as it was less than 25 sf and could not even stand in front of the sink without the door swinging into you. And then you get the nice walk-in closet door that hits the night stand and will not open all the way... odd is the best to describe the overall layout.
Although we were using Marriott points for this stay, I was pretty disappointed with the age and unkept feeling of the rooms. The food was ok in the restaurants, but we got "hood winked" into the famous Sunday buffet brunch while getting our free coffee Sat. morning and were told by the staff it was well worth $24.99 per person price tag. So we make reservations for noon and get there just before only find a big line as a ton of people were making there way in at the same time. Great table location by the windows overlooking the Bay, but the food was ok at best. My biggest disappointment was the big write up on the sign in front of the omlette bar touting the lump crab as the best choice, so I try to order one and am told "no lump crab today" by one of the omlette makers... really? Service was marginal as we had to chase down the wait staff to keep our memosa's full and then we get the bill - $34.99 each and not the $24 we were told on Sat. However, the bar service was always great each evening, but should you order anything top shelf they price it accordingly.
Don't get me wrong as this is a great location and for a nice break from the northern winters, I really enjoyed it. But between the room layout and bouncing floor to the overpriced brunch, not sure I would recommend or go back. Which is too bad as they have a ton of history at this location and the sunsets are just amazing.

Thank your comments concerning your recent stay. It is through the constructive perceptions from our guests that allows us to improve our performance.
I apologize for your room and the breakfast buffet not meeting your expectations. The Grand offers many varieties of rooms with a variety of views, from our more modern design of the Spa building to our historic setting in our Main and Bay view buildings. Our check-in time is 4PM and we strive to assist guests who would like to check in earlier when possible. All guestrooms in all of our buildings are to be ready by 4PM. For our breakfast buffet, our standard is to have our signature items available as listed on our menu or to notify our guests prior to them placing the order. I apologize this did not occur. There is always room for improvement and we appreciate your patronage and the candid review. We look forward to serving you on your return to the Grand Hotel Marriott Resort, Golf Club and Spa and having you enjoy the serenity of our beautiful sunset on the Mobile Bay.

Was here for a week for a working meeting and couldn't have been in a better location in April. Weather in the high 70's on the bay, and great food to boot. From an excellent breakfast in the restaurant, off the menu, to salmon from room service. I would recommend this location for a relaxing jaunt!
