“Good BBQ - Great service”
Reviewed January 17, 2013

Johnny Ray's has been around Birmingham, Jefferson & Shelby counties for many years. Try the 1/2 blond chicken - it is enough for 2 people. = and you get to order 3 sides with each order. Onion rings - yum!! They are extra or can count as 2 sides.

“Terrible”
Reviewed July 29, 2012 via mobile

Ate at Johnny Ray's during an over nite stay in Pelham. We decided to try a local restaurant since we are not from the area and traveling through. We had 3 adults and a teenager in our party, we went on a Saturday. For an appetizer we ordered the loaded fries or whatever they where called. It was just frozen crinkle cut fries with velveeta and bacon bits with way too much season salt on it. Then we had three orders of the Pork plates and one order of the chicken blonde 1/2. The pork was really dry and the sauce was really vinegary. The chicken also was really dry almost to the point that it was hard. Some in our party liked the sauce some did not. The sides where less then good also, the potatoe salad was very bland and the fried pickle chips where way to salty. The bread you get with your meal is just barely toasted hamburger buns and all the meat was almost room temperature. The service however was very good, you never waited for a drink refill and the food came out fast. The restaurant was clean and a comfortable climit. To sum it up though I would have rather ate at McDonald's which is really sad. I would avoid this place as of now it's probably one of the worst restaurants I've ever eaten at, and we travel a lot.

“Homemade Pies and Side Dishes”
Reviewed April 29, 2012

The meats were ok, they put way to much sauce on them for our taste. If we go back we'll probably ask for that on the side. However, the side dishes all tasted homemade and the pies are excellent. The facilty was very neat and clean, seemed a little short on wait staff but overall positive experience.

“The Aroma Invites”
Reviewed June 29, 2009

You can smell the barbecue cooking before you see the restaurant and that's quite an invitation to stop in. The place is in a storefront in a newer strip mall. We tried the chopped pork sandwich and added slaw on top. They call it Texas style, but I'm from Florida and I frequently fix it that way. It's good barbecue. I'd like to try other items on this menu such as the ribs and pies.
