This is our 2nd year vacationing at the Phoenix and we love the place, but there is so much damage from the storms of last year all along the nearby beaches that it was a pretty bleak experience. We stayed there from August 13 to 18th and we had to drive a long way to get away from the damaged areas to find restaurants, even watched a fairly new hotel right up the road be demolished as it was too damaged to repair, as were many nice homes.

We'll go back, but it will be a few years down the road; if I wanted to spend time walking along the ruins of people's lost dreams and devastated lives, I'd have just stayed home, hung-out with the in-laws and saved the air fare....:-O

We just returned from a 4 night stay at Phoenix I. I realize this condo is an 'older' building, but I expect better service and a nicer facility. I am very sympathetic to the post-Ivan reconstruction and that was not part of the problem. This was also our 15th year vacationing in the Gulf Shores area.
The biggest problem was that our unit's outside lock did not work and it took the realty agency (Meyer) until our 3rd day to fix it. When we first arrived, the lock plate was dangling off. A screw was missing and the latch would not catch. I immediately called Meyer to report the problem, but it was constantly busy, even though our confirmation sheet said to call that number for 24 hour service. No luck. Had to leave the unit unlocked the first night when we went out. Called again in the morning, again busy. Another day, it went unlocked. Finally went downstairs, but the desk was manned by another realty agency, and even though the lady was very nice, there was nothing she could do. Went another day with the unit unsecured. At night, my son was able to rig up a device with a piece of cardboard so we could at least deadbolt it from within.
On the 3rd day, we still could not get through, so we physically went to the office and reported the problem. They assured us it would be fixed. We went about our merry way and upon our return that night, we found a note in the door saying the lock had been fixed and ------- the new keys were on the dining table!!!!! We were locked out! We had to go back downstairs, bother the nice lady again, call Meyer and wait for them to come and let us in. We had also just been to the store and had ice cream melting this whole time. All in all, we went 3 days with our unit being totally vulnerable.
A few other bothersome items: the oven was rickety and rusty, the wallpaper in the bathroom was peeling, the cabinets needed painting. Just looked worn and shabby. The balcony was not private at all. Every other unit could see you and you could see them. The security guard at the front gate was not always there. Sometimes you could just drive in. Also, very noisy late at night. Kids were still screaming in the pool after 11 pm.
We will return to Gulf Shores but it won't be to the Phoenix.
