“Beautiful Country Resort”
Reviewed December 7, 2012

This Marriott sits in a beautiful wooded area in Opelika, AL and next to the Robert Trent Jones Golf Course. The grounds are well manicured and the lobby is designed to fit the decor of the woodland area. The staff was very welcoming. Lots of easy parking. I was impressed with the fixtures, trim and decor of the public areas of the hotel. There is a rustic quaintness even in the bar and restaurant. I enjoyed my stay and would return. But I'm not sure what this resort wants to be when it grows up. With such luxury in the lobby and atrium areas, the hallways to the rooms were under decorated which allows your eye to focus on the countless scratches on the walls and room doors. The same was true in my room. Actually, my first room assignment had the overwhelming odor of mold and wet rags. The front desk was very apologetic and moved me to a better room. The new room was wonderful and fresh. But again, scratched up. The decor was elegant but different than the lobby area. Maybe the lobby had been remodeled. The view is out to the pool area which was beautifully landscaped and had a outdoor bar/grill that was closed for winter. There was also a massive childrens play area with a water slide and fun water features. Again, these just didn't match the elegant rustic upscale golf resort which is your first impression when you check in. The food in the restaurant and bar was very good. Lot's of nice choices. The bartender took advantage of it being slow and spent most of his time sending text messages and talking to the waitresses. He did tell me at one point they had gotten a new coach. I just smiled and said that's nice. Was it for his adult basketball league, his kids school. No clue since I don't live in the area. He continued to joyfully tell me about all the other coaches "they" had looked at but decided on this one. I finally figured out he was talking about Auburn. Great but an odd conversation. Like he didn't understand that people from around the country will be staying at this hotel who do not track every single college football program in the country. I'm delighted he has something to look foward to next season.

My room was nice. The bathroom was very upscale but didn't have any towel holders or hooks for your bath towel. My hairdryer didn't work but the front desk quickly brought me another one.The beds are very comfortable, so are the pillows. The TV's are like 32" flat screens and hard to see because of the size of the room. Most of the Courtyards have 42" screens.

Get a room with a balcony and enjoy the beautiful view.I thank the staff for all their great service.

Room Tip: Get a room with a balcony so you can enjoy the view out to the pool and wooded area. It's so pea...

Our family of 4 stayed here one night after an Auburn football game and were pleasantly surprised! The rooms were very roomy and the resort seemed like it was brand new. The pool area was fabulous and at night there were many families hanging out around the pool area bar and fire pit tables. The staff was very friendly. As other reviewers pointed out, the resort is pretty remote from Auburn and Opelika, but like most Marriotts, there is a shuttle. The food in the restaurant was just okay--typical hotel food that was over-priced. Overall, because of the wonderful family atmosphere and terrific rooms, we will be staying again for future games.

Excellent rooms and service, great weekend resort for golf or just relaxing. Nice for a football weekend and a great outdoor area for hiking and biking. Convenient to Auburn campus and downtown area plus historic Opelika worth a visit for browsing and trying some of the restaurants

Traveled here with a group on a golf trip to the RTJ Trail. Upon arrival, the grounds are impressive. Really a great looking property with an amazing pool, outdoor bar/restaurant, lobby, etc. It was October so the weather wasn't exactly pool-friendly. Our group of 11 had travel issues and were seriously behind schedule thanks to airplane issues. We were trying to catch an Auburn football game before our golf adventure, but delays put all but a couple of us at least an hour late. Fortunately, the hotel was very accommodating with check-in and allowed the earliest guest to check in all rooms so as to make arriving, dropping bags and leaving a quick process for those that were late. Also, they were great about holding a shuttle for our group although we did not end up needing it.

As for the rooms, they're pretty basic and standard for a Marriott. To be fair, we were hardly even in our rooms due to our hectic schedule, so they more than satisfied our minimum requirements. The only issue I had was with regard to TV signal. For some reason, nearly every channel we would select would at some point appear to have an issue with the "horizontal hold" (an ancient term meaning that the picture would scroll up so that the top half of the picture was at the bottom and the bottom half of the picture was at the top). Kind of bizarre. And this was an issue in all of our rooms. But again, we didn't watch much TV in the rooms, so just a small quibble.

On the first evening, we went to the outside / poolside bar for drinks, sports viewing, and enjoyment. It's a pretty great area for that kind of thing. Lots of TVs, pretty good service, and decent food. The only issue we had is that they closed WAY too early on a Saturday night. When they closed the bar at something like 9 pm, there were 30+ people still drinking and ordering food. I never understand why a kitchen will stop serving food and the bar would stop serving drinks at such an early hour on a Saturday night! There was another bar inside, but they weren't serving outside.

The next morning we took in the breakfast buffet, which was just great. One of my favorite hotel breakfast buffets. Service was pretty good too. Then we played Grand National (Links Course) and were very pleased with the ease of getting a shuttle to the course and everything pretty much came off without a hitch. Only complaint is that there is no concept of separatation of church and state as they have laws against drinking on Sunday before noon. What a ridiculous part of the country! Not Marriott's fault, just a fact to remember when traveling to a part of the country still living in ancient times.

That night we were back in the interior bar (got back after 9, so outside bar was closed again but it was Sunday). Tried to watch the NLCS... no dice. They didn't have TNT on ANY television, via cable or satellite? We were stunned. Anyway, the bar food and service was again very good.

Check-out went very smoothly and we were on our way down the Trail.

Overall, a good experience at the Marriott Auburn Opeliika at Grand National. Service was great, with a couple small hiccups along the way. But if you're playing golf there, I would still highly recommend this hotel as the best option.

Our specific requirement for playing golf on the RTJ golf trail was to find a hotel close to Grand National golf courses and the Marriott Opelika was the obvious choice.
Having stayed in numerous Marriott hotels it was a reasonable safe choice and we were not disappointed.
The hotel itself is set in a lovely and quiet location and kept in very neat and tidy order. The room we had was very clean and nicely decorated, a really nice comfortable king bed with all the toiletries and bits and pieces you would expect from this grade of Mariott accommodation.
The reception, lobby, public rooms, bars and restaurants are quite large, well decorated and light and airy which gave the impression of lots of space for guests.
One excellent plus of the hotel was the swimming pools a large pool with lots of fun water features for youngsters and another seperate pool for adult swim. There are also good facilities around the pool area such as snack/coffee bar and a bar area with bar stools and tables and chairs selling beer and wine.
The staff, as seems common in this part of the USA were very helpful, friendly and very obligning to deal efficiently with a number of our requests and questions we had,
As an example a nice lady of member of staff printed us out a map and directions to a particular restaurant we wanted to go to.
All in all I can recommend this hotel as a pleasant suprise in the Marriott chain.
Dorsetdon.
