Renaissance Montgomery Hotel & Spa at the Convention Center

I just returned from a brief stay at the highly touted but fairly uninspiring Renaissance in Montgomery. I'll hit the key points:
Check-in was painfully slow considering there was no line. It took a good 6-7 minutes to process - highlighted by them taking my key back because they inadvertently did not give me a key that sad "Marriott Elite" on it. I explained that I didn't care - but they did - and it added an extra 2 minutes to a long check-in.

Room is nice and new. Bed was nice, TV was a decent flat screen and the iPod/technology dock was cool. Both wired and wireless internet available for $10/day. Bathroom is decent but cheap towels, weird lack of towels near the shower and a bizarre decision to offer Q-Tips - but only two - took a bit away. There was also an unstocked mini-bar and the drink machine on the floor was already broken.

The location of the Spa and Gym was right out of Spinal Tap. While my room was on the 8th floor - the same floor as the gym - it required a "change of planes" on the second floor. I had to take the elevator down to 2, turn right and walk about 200 yards through the parking garage to get to a connecting elevator. The gym was nice. Good cardio with TV and iPod connector built in and no one else there on either of my two visits. That said, the difficulty of getting there was a poor architectual decision.

All in all - the hotel is totally fine. Nothing more but definitely a step in the right direction for Montgomery.

This new convention center/hotel is an interesting place. It seems strangely out of place as there are few restaurants in the immediate area, and certainly a late night walk is out of the question given the neighborhood.
Overall, the hotel is very attractive. I however had the worst stay I can remember. Upon check in, there were about 8 employees standing at the door, all who wanted to know way too much information about my trip in.. VERY ANNOYING. Check in was a problem in that the room I reserved was not available.
Self parking was $10 per day, and I cannot even describe the confusion one endures as one parks, gets on an elevator that leads to nowhere.
Once I was able to figure out that on must take that elevator to the convention level, I then navigated my way through seemingly miles of corridors back to the hotels main elevator system. In the four days I was at the hotel, I found only one elevator to be operational. This caused VERY long delays in waiting for a lift up and down the 9 floors.
Here were the other things that were a problem"

TV turned off and on without rhyme or reason, only had 8 channels. that functioned

The noise from the fountains outside and music from the patio was very loud deep into the night (past 11:30 pm)

Train runs nightly directly outside the hotel

Water was never hot, just very luke warm

Staff was attentive, but overly aggressive in questions of a personal nature.

however, the most ridiculous part of the stay came in the second day when I returned to my room to find that housecleaning had folded clothes and placed them in my suitcase, as well as personal items, closed my suitcase and moved it to a different area of the room.

I have never had a hotel whose housekeeping staff were allowed to touch personal belongings, but no problem at this place. The annoyance, beyond personal boundries, was that they folded some running attire I had used at the gym that morning and placed it alongside my clean clothes, shut my bag, and to be frank, the clothes in the bag suffered from the "less than fresh" aroma of work out gear.

I do hope that management gets the problems ironed out in this hotel. It does have potential. However, I cannot recommend this hotel and as a visitor to Montgomery once per month, I have no intention of returning until such time that I am CERTAIN that things have changed at this "resort."
