Owner description: The names of 40 people killed in the battle for civil rights between 1954, when the U.S. Supreme Court outlawed segregation, and 1968, the year of the assassination of Martin Luther King, are embedded forever in this round, flat, granite sculpture. Water flows gently over the surface of the inspiring memorial, designed by Maya Lin, who also created the Vietnam Veterans Memorial.

“History before your eyes”
Reviewed January 13, 2012

This is a self- guided your with a short documentary. Here you would read a lot about the civil rights movement and the fight that continues today. As with the King home this is a humbling experience. Towards the end of the tour you can add your name to the "Wall of Tolerance" which is absolutely amazing

“A quick yet meaningful experience”
Reviewed November 29, 2011

A good, brief overview of the ongoing civil rights movement, including those we don't think about being part of the struggle as much. Add your name to the Wall of Tolerance (inside the Center) to help you remember to make civil rights a daily reality.

“Beautiful Memorial”
Reviewed April 20, 2011

The Civil Rights Memorial in Montgomery is a beautiful way to remember the struggle for civil rights. It was created by Maya Lin, the same person who created the Vietnam Memorial in Washington DC. It is not only beautiful, but also interactive. Visitors are encouraged to touch the names and the water as it flows over the stone.
