The state capitol building has been restored to it's former glory. Each room is exquisite, especially the tromp l'oil finish in the former House of Representatives. The murals above the rotunda are beautiful and depict the history of Alabama.

The capitol sits at the head of downtown and you can combine the trip to the capitol with a visit to the Alley downtown and the riverfront.

This was more interesting then I thought. The architecture was amazing, and there was some rich history here. The most interesting thing to me was standing on the star where Jefferson Davis took the oath for the Confederacy. Dr. King's church is 2 blocks down the road. It was very captivating to see the juxtaposition of the Confederacy and the birthplace of the Civil Rights movement.

As far as state capitals go, this one was okay. We had a hard time getting in - the entrance is in the rear lower level - and the actual lawmakers meet in a newer building across the street, but some nice art work, able to see the older meeting places and galleries, friendly southerners, and a nice gift shop,

We loved the rotunda and the huge stairway leading up to the Capitol. Jefferson Davis' star, engraved on the front portico, where he was inaugurated president of the Confederacy, was history personified. Interesting building to explore, learn about Alabama and its governors.

Capitol building is beautiful and easily accessible. At first I was very surprised at how casual it was, but during the tour, I realized the the actual state Legislature and Senate are in seperate, nearby buildings, so the Capitol is now more of a museum. Still interesting, though.
