“Great value right by the street market”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 5, 2007

This was a great little hotel. It had a communal living room with free WiFi and a black and white cat and a couple of leather sofas (beware if you are sweaty not to get red dye from the red one on your clothes as a fellow traveler did).

We had a room at the back so it was very quiet. The shared showers were good and clean. Outside at the back was a balcony and ladders up to the roof. From the top there's an excellent view of roofs in the old part of Melaka.

The breakfast was good and simple - cornflakes, toast and marmalade or jam, fruit, tea/coffee. You could get tea/coffee any time of day.

The location is terrific - its right by the street market and a short walk to museums. Melaka is a terrific place to learn about the history of Malaysia.

The wooden shoes looked interesting and I didn't see as many in Langkawi - moral should have bought some there.

One of the 2 guys running the guest house studied EE in Birmingham UK - they were most helpful and welcoming to their delightful guest house. We also enjoyed meeting other guests.

  • Disliked — I locked myself out late at night - only one room key and my husband had gone in with it

Number Twenty is in a great central location in Melaka - right on Jonker Walk in the Chinatown area.

The decor of the guesthouse is very stylish with lovely wooden floors and simple white painted walls. Plus Tom the cat is always around for a few tickles!

It is a pricey place to stay, especially as none of the rooms are ensuite. Plus, whilst we were staying there, karioke singers were on fine form at a bar behind the guesthouse - so I can imagine those staying in rooms toward the back of the building would either have to join in or turn the air con up high to drown out the noise.

Overall though, we did enjoy our stay there and the owners were very friendly.

This guest house has the most gorgeous facade in Jonker Street. Its white, Dutch era structure stands out from the other older and simplisitc shop houses on the left side of Jonker Street (left side of the street as per traffic flow).

Its reception is located on the second floor which you may miss for the first time. The easiest way is look out for the white building opposite the unmissable maroon coloured Famosa Chicken Rice Shop.

The gate / door to the guest house has to be rang to get the receptionist to open it for you which adds the sense of security. The reception lounge is like a chic and comfy living room with 42 inches TV and Ikea style sofa. The balcony overlooks the busy and sometimes noisy Jonker Street.

The room is newly painted (no smell though), simple (sometimes you get those rooms with antique built in shelves) but yet chic. The wooden flooring is kept clean and some of them is original flooring dated back few decades ago. Bathroom is shared but the whole place is like the cleanest house you have ever been. There is a combination of modern and antique furniture and bathroom items which match perfectly.

Breakfast is the simple cereal and bread. However, you can step out anytime to get food in China Town with dozens of cafes, restaurants and bars.

There are some small roof top seating tables which you can enjoy your beer and admire the beautiful roof tops of ancient china town houses.

The only negative thing of this guest house for some people is you can hear noises in the guest house during weekend when there is Jonker Walk Bazaar and the karaoke cafe behind but they are closed before midnight.

This is certainly one of the best guesthouses in Malaysia.
