Wanted to book the new Holiday Inn hotel but was not able to get a room. Tried to book Aldy Hotel but it was fully booked on Saturday. Decided to book Fenix Inn instead as it looks pretty new.

Was able to check-in around 12 plus although the official check-in timing should be 2pm. Paid a deposit of 300RM and the extra amount was returned when I check out. Check in was completed in less than 10 mins.

Was given a room at the 3rd Storey. There is no lift and you will have to walk up the narrow staircase. Can be quite tiring to climb up the stairs everyday but the advantage is that there are less tenants staying on the third floor so it was quite quiet.

The room is quite small. The bed was ok with 3 pillows. Hate the door for the bathroom. It closes on its own and the banging can be quite irritating. You can also hear the banging of doors from other rooms.

There is no window for single and twin rooms. The air-con was quite good. The TV only have limited channels, all local channels. However, if you wish to watch cable tv, you can go down to the lobby to watch a movie or soccer match. Just tell the receptionist that you wish to watch something else.

The hotel is near the shopping centres. You can walk to the historical sites by cutting through the shopping centre. Around 10-15 mins away from Jonkers Walk.

There are several shops around the hotel. Do check out the coffeeshop behind the hotel that serve cheap breakfast. You can try out roti canai (same as roti prata in Singapore) at another coffeeshop which is open at night. It is indian bread with curry and it only cost 0.70RM.

Do try the nonya restaurant near the hotel called Bayonya. Very good and affordable nonya food. There are also other nice restaurants around the area such as Simply Fish (opp Maybank), do check it out.

Overall, I will highly recommend this hotel as you get a nice clean room at 88RM. It can be a bit far from the Jonkers Walk but it is nearer to the shopping centres. If you drive, the hotel provides good parking lots.

Found the Fenix listed in the Lonely Planet and checked out their website. What you see is exactly what you get - simple but very clean (spotless and new) and modern rooms. TV and coffee/tea making stuff in rooms and a great business centre attached with reasonably priced email/internet access (4RM per hour). There are other places in Melaka with more character that's true - but this is reliable and very reasonable (we paid 88RM for the double room) - and you can go out to see the character!!. The staff were very friendly and welcoming and the location is pretty good (near restaurants etc and a short walk to the main sights).

This hotel is just off the main road to the historic sites. The standard rooms are small but clean, The carpeted rooms are clean and odourless. The bathrooms too are modern, a bit of a squeeze, but clean. The twin beds are narrow as they come, but the matress, linen and pillows are excellent. There is a water fountain on the floor.

Key to this hotel is the very professional hotel management. The manager is a charming gentleman (James) he showed uncommon personal interest in helping us, even a drive in his personal car to the bus terminal on the outskirts to buy our bus tickets, as we might have lucked out with the busy lunar New Year approaching. . For breakfast try the Roti Canai (pronounced Chenai (Madras) . Just about all the local resteaunts serve them. There is one behind the Fenix if you take the parking area to get to the street at the back.

We would stay there again. The expensive Equatorial Hotel is around the corner.

Well its a really budget hotel. where the car park was actually part of the hotel floor. Its a convert of 2 or 3 shop lots to a budget hotel. The car part was occupying a lot space. but they do have another site if the guest parking was full.

The rooms clean and no smell. The only down side no lift can be seen. So if you do have a big luggage it will be a little tough to go up the narrow stairs. Toilets clean, the sink and the heater works well.

At night - noise quite noticeable where there a disco cum karaoke outlet just beside the hotel. 7-11 nearby and walking distance there were 2 shopping mall. I would said a good deal for the price. Small family would be ideal.
