If you hv been staying in the usual modernist plastic & chrome city hotels, you will be pleasantly surprise at the decor and "Malaccan" feel of the Settlement Hotel.
I was in the Junior Suite for 2 nights and loved it. It has enough space to sit around, the washroom is huge. The hotel is small enough to be personal. And the staff is wonderfully obliging.
Please note that it is not in the town centre, so that's either a plus or a minus depending on what you are looking for. I prefer not to be in the centre of the busy town and crowds.
What I like:
-Floor tiles are evocative of the old Malaccan tiles. Gave the room and hotel great atmostphere. The staircase is the old 1970s mosaic type - reminds me of many old govt buildings (which was really what the hotel was in its previous life)
-Very well maintained, smallish and clean hotel
-Very comfortable beds and pillows
-Has a secured parking lot, not street parking
-Booking is wonderfully handled by Mr Que, it took all of 3 minutes to get what I want, followed immed by clear email instructions
-Great staff/service: Obliging and wonderful service from the front office staff & managers. Tq Shima and Liu, for your suggestions on places and eateries
-Love the free shuttle to town. I would use it rather than drive and park in the busy Jonkers' area. Coming back by taxi cost RM20-25
What could be improved:
-Breakfast was mediocre, the coffee is just darkish water, the rest not very appetising
-Suggest that the complimentary mini-bar is replenish daily rather than just once per stay -wouldn't cost much, and it's great to come back to cold drinks after the heat
-Covered parking bays - the car gets really hot!
-Managers need to keep a quality check on housekeeping -my room wasn't swept/vacuumed when I checked in, floor was full of hairs (it was ok after that)
Stay here if you are looking for a clean, safe hotel with good value and some atmostphere. Not if you would want to return to the hotel several times in-between sightseeing and shopping.. The hotel is an oasis of calm and airyness..
-There is a food court (evenings only) across the road that serves a variety of local food. the oyster-omelette is not bad. 7Eleven is nearby.
-At the Portuguese Settlement seafood square, be prepared for hoards of vendors descending on you. In the cacophony, your food is going to be a gamble anyway.. and it turned out the food we had at eatery 88 is mediocre..
