Arrived in Malacca last Saturday 12th July to spend the final 2 nights of our 20 day trip around Malaysia, Bangkok and Singapore. The travellers were my wife, myself and our teenage daughter. We had booked all of our travel and accommodation over the internet from our home in Australia and had no insurmountable problems during our trip. The last 2 nights we deliberately left unplanned in case we wanted to extend our stay in Singapore.
We travelled to Malacca by train to Tampin then took a local bus the 30 or so kilometers to Malacca sentral bus station which is a fair way out of town, then took a taxi to the city. The Orkid hotel looked quite presentable from the outside and the fellow on reception was helpful and showed us the available room which was a family room on the 9th floor, it appeared fine and we agreed to stay for 2 nights at 300 Ringits a night, including breakfast.
What a mistake. Within 30 minutes of turning in for the night the all pervading smell of deeply ingrained stale cigarette smoke became apparent throughout the suite, all night long our daughter was awake coughing and my wife developed an extremely bad headache, myself an 8year exsmoker felt very nauseous and could not sleep. We got through the night and went down to breakfast to find not one palateable dish, the toasters were faulty and the butter rancid.
We packed, checked out and took a wonderful room at the Holiday Inn for only a few Ringits more.
