“very basic accommodation”
Reviewed March 12, 2013

The Baba House is a very basic accommodation. Lots of aspects can be improved. I found the reception is not very organised. We booked 2 rooms and there was a dispute on the type of rooms we have booked and the rate. The receptionist consulted a lady whom i believe is the supervisor and the owner of Baba House (she dressed very casual - a t-shirt and shorts with a pair of flip-flop). The way she handled the dispute was not very friendly but not overly rude either.
Both rooms are very small with no window at all. We requested and paid for an extra bed for one of the room and it is in fact only a mattress. With the extra mattress in the room, there is basically no floor space at all in the room. The floor is tiled and not carpeted and i believe that it has not been cleaned for ages. I walked for 3 steps in the room and my feet became black and dusty. The air-conditioning unit in the room is very noisy.
The breakfast is very simple and very basic. It was an absolute chaos during the breakfast hour in the Baba Cafe where the breakfast is served. Not much food selection for breakfast. The lady serving the breakfast is very friendly.
The location is excellent and it is close to almost all the attractions!!

This hotel is affordable and serviceable. It's in a great location, just right around the corner from Jonkers and everything else you want to see. I think I paid $50USD for our room, and that was with very little notice. We had a king bed, a great aircon, a hot shower, and no windows, which made the room nice for sleeping in. If you've done much travel around Asia, you can probably agree that's all you can ask for! (plus a Western toilet).

We really like this place, despite the quirks. Yeah there's rust in the shower, but what do I care? There are clean towels! Rejoice! Plus, the staff are really friendly. The older night clerk even gave us extra water when we came in very late on Friday night. Very nice.

Just FYI, the spa only takes cash, and it opens at noon. The spa does not have my recommendation for those reasons.

One thing I must say that is good about this hotel is it's walking distance-location to Jonker Street, Red Fort & Pahlawan Mall.

This hotel has parking at the back but parking area is small and can only fit 10-12 cars comfortably.

We chose room 141 which has no windows facing outside but a window in the bathroom facing into the bedroom, how quaint!

The hotel comes equipped with a tv (with lousy buttons, no remote and you can only access 3 channels). Since it was a group family trip, we found out that one of the booked rooms had no cupboard at all!

Toiletries are provided but we noticed that one of paper-wrapped toiletries (the toothbrush) was missing from the pack, which means housekeeping didn't check the contents at all! No face towel is provided although it is listed on the price charges (should you wish to buy as a souvenier).

The road where the front of the hotel faces is parallel to Jonker street and it is an absolute must to visit the night market where it is abuzz with activities such as shopping for knick knacks, food and stage for singing. Loved it! I was informed that this night market is only available on Fri, Sat & Sun nights.

The lane in front of the hotel is narrow with cars legally parked on the side, so be careful if you walk.

Ah yes, if you are choosing to eat out for breakfast, not many stalls are open before 9am. I recall seeing two wantan noodle stores along Jonker, but that's about it.

There's a small wet market across the road diagonally from the back parking of the hotel, in case you want to buy some local produce.

For lunch and dinner and supper, have no worries! Food aplenty!

Room Tip: Choose a room that is NOT on the ground level. The walkway is where everyone uses to get to the back...

I spent here one night only, first I booked a room without windows-didnt know the lowest category was without windows-, so paid the difference and got a room without window. I dont like to use the AC and he was very fine in the night. I liked my stay here, in the very historical part of Melaka city, but night time is very quiet, i guess here will be better to stay especially at the weekends.

Room Tip: Prefer getting a room with window

stayed 1/2/13 ~ 2/2/13(one night only)
Room 140(first floor) { cheaper compared to the ones upstairs}

Lobby is impressive. Nice street within jonker area.. a few hotels around the same street as well. Hotel is simply decorated and corridors are clean(non-aircon). Room is entered via contact keycard, and the same card to be used for the electricity. Do request for an extra card if you need , else they'll give you only 1 per room. But do remember to return the card, as there is a penalty of RM20 each, if you don't.

Deposit is required, even though the room is already fully paid prior(through agoda). RM50 for each room , each night.

Room is relatively clean, and acceptable toilet and shower area. Rain shower only, not handheld.

Very nice/simple toiletries provided(toothbrush, comb, shower cap, shower, soap, cotton bud) in a small plastic pouch.

Television does not come with remote, but for the price paid.. i'm happy with what i get. Aircon in the room is also acceptable, and i like the hard bed.. very comfy for me.

They also have slippers provided... just be careful when the floor is wet.

overall nice/simple/clean hotel and at a very reasonable price.

Room Tip: if you don't mind, the rooms on the first floor are good enough.. spend more on food/shopping/ma...

The Baba House was actually the only hotel that had a couple more rooms still available as we went during peak time on a weekend. We were lucky to have got them. The hotel provides a comfortable and clean place to stay and will satisfy those looking for decent accommodation at affordable rates. It's easy access (a 5 minute walk each way) to all the attractions in the Melaka town centre and the lovely food stalls and markets on Jonker Street. I have no complains about the rooms themselves except the breakfast that comes as part of the room package needs to be slightly more lively. The orange juice tasted like water with a bit of orange in it and the sausages looked pale and not very appetising. They should just make offer a menu of nonya style dishes to keep in line with the heritage theme they've got going on. Also the staff needs to be more helpful and informative especially when they know the guests are tourists and not locals. The best feature I liked about this hotel were the antique pieces of furniture and decor from the Baba-Nonya and Peranakan Chinese era. If you are in Melaka purely to sight see and don't intend spending all your time at the hotel then this place will definitely serve the purpose.
