We arrived via the not-very-salubrious car park entry to the hotel, slightly daunted by its setting. However, the welcome by the staff, and the delightfulness of the hotel, changed our minds within minutes. The hotel was built in the 1920s for a Chinese tin magnate, and the owners have very sensibly decided to go with the decor and ambience of the time, with a few modern touches, rather than 'minimalise' it, as so many other hotels have done.
All rooms overlook the river and the old Malay town beneath, which makes for a nice wander in the dusk. The rooms are large, with the claw-foot bath a focal point, but can be closed off with sliding shuttered doors. The bed was comfortable, the furnishings tasteful, and we thought it was a super place.
Breakfasts were substantial, and we had one evening meal there. Although the food at dinner was good, it was not outstanding, and there are so many eating places within easy distance that we chose to eat elsewhere thereafter.
The staff were amazing. Returning from a guided walk around the town (organised through the hotel), hot and sticky, they rushed forward with cool drinks, even colder compresses for face and hands, and insisted that we sit under the fans until we had cooled down. Such attention to detail, and care for their guests, is almost unheard of in today's hotel society.
We travelled around Malaysia for three weeks, and this was one of the best hotels we stayed in. It ticked all the boxes - small and intimate, attention to the most minute of detail, and extremely comfortable. Loved it, and would return.
