“We enjoyed the experience.”
Reviewed July 3, 2013

It is a lovely hotel and it was a good finish to our Asia trip.
Although the hotel is not perfect, it is the only place we would stay in Malacca.
The rooms have room for improvement - they are a bit tired - but we couldn't fault the rest of the hotel. We enjoyed high tea, liked coming back to a lovely sanctuary at the end of a busy day and found the location good. The staff are generally very friendly.
The walking tour provided by the hotel was excellent and we met some other lovely guests on the tour to.
We had dinner one night at the Mansion restaurant. Not perfect, but OK.
The breakfast was excellent.
In summary, if we return to Malacca we will stay here again without hesitation.

This boutique hotel in Malacca, Malaysia has a lot going for it but attention to details could stand some slight improvements. Still I would not hesitate to recommend it. Built in the middle 1920’s (the same time our condo residence was built), the Majestic has plenty of charm and style. A mansion was built by a rich Chinese family; it still has the original floor tile and louvered windows. Now behind the original mansion, an adjoining ten story building was added, along with a small swimming pool and exercise room.
The white coated staff of men is friendly and eager to please. The lobby and restaurant, one flight up, are both well-appointed and comfortable. The food has the variety of all the previous culture who occupied the city, the Portuguese, the Dutch, and the English.
However, during high tea in the afternoon, one of the chocolate sweets had used rancid oil in its making. Having the experience of my own misadventure with rancid shortening, I immediately knew the cause of the unpleasant taste. The waiter brought out the cook and I gave my opinion, which I think was received well, but who knows really what goes on in a restaurant kitchen. A follow up visit by the manager later was made where he expressed concern that I was satisfied.
After that I, didn’t express my strongest complaint about the pianist who plays during dinner for fear of being branded as a complaining picky foreigner. But the extremely talented, young pianist plays every piece at the same tempo and volume, and each piece has added so many trills and flourishes that it is sometimes difficult to follow the tune. He didn’t seem to play for the enjoyment of his audience rather he was playing for himself.
A dining room atmosphere should be soft where conversation is easy.
Once outside, expect to walk through narrow streets without the safety of sidewalks. Make sure you experience the night market on Sunday night and visit the old galleon to gain appreciation of life on a ship during the 1700’s and 1800’s. There are many other museums to enjoy also. Malacca once was a very important trade center but fell due to competition with Singapore.

A belated review but a must as we had such an enjoyable stay here. This was our first family trip away with our 7month old baby. What could easily have been just another hotel stay was made so memorable by the friendly and personal service from the efficient staff (apparently a trademark of ytl hotels), beautiful and comfortable decor, little touches like the delicious evening dessert, and excellent walking historical tour, which I highly recommend. Only downsides (which cost a star) are the slight distance from the historical/food/shopping center of malacca, which for our baby and the malaysian heat meant cab rides everywhere; and lack of a jacuzzi

We stayed 2 nights/3 days in this wonderful hotel and thoroughly enjoyed the property. My wife, 2 teenage daughters and I were captivated by the ambience, rooms, and personalized service. Upon arrival, we were welcomed by Mr. Ben Quah, the GM, and he gave us a short history of the hotel. Ben is such a likeable person that we became friends immediately. He is highly experienced in the hotel industry and knows his way around all the properties that belong to the YTL Group. The Majestic Malacca holds a top place, thanks to Ben's attention to detail. His staff are all excellent and go above and beyond: Vinod the assistant manager was always available when Ben was away. Poshan the F and B manager was very focused on ensuring top service. Chef Poh was such a pleasant man who was in charge of producing such excellent meals - he even put together a lunch and bought kopi ice for our departure! Assistant chef Richard was so friendly and helpful in giving us directions. All the doormen/bellmen/security personnel were terrific - so willing to assist in everything. Buffet breakfast was a pleasant experience - partly self service for light items and table service for the entrees. Very classy, great service, and you could have anything you desired. Rooms were very comfortable and clean - so well equipped and beautifully furnished. The sheets were amazing - top quality and my wife even considered purchasing them!

Hotel location is ideal for us - close enough to Jonker St and Heeren St, but away from the hustle and bustle. It's a 15 minute walk from the hotel to Jonker/Heeren Streets, a great way to discover little shops/restaurants and see the river and old buildings.

We can unreservedly recommend this hotel for any traveller looking for a bit of history and top levels of comfort and service. It's so nice to sit in the lobby or adjoining reading rooms, have tea, and dream of a different time and age. My family plans to make the Majestic a regular stop on our Malaysia trips. Another YTL gem!

This is a lovely gracious colonial hotel located opposite the Morton historical village and adjacent to the canal. Conveniently close to the tourist haunts. The large rooms are lavishly decorated in the older style with large comfortable beds and marble bathrooms with claw foot baths. The service is attentive and outstanding. All guests are offered a courtesy walking tour of local historical sites with a knowledgable and well spoken member os staff which is very worthwhile. We were also provided with shopping tips and advice on some of the local restaurants. They also have a pool, spa with massage and other beauty treatments. I personally very much enjoyed a cooking class with the hotel chef which was both fun and extremely informative, I would highly recommend staying at the majestic.

Room Tip: The one I had was great being a standard room

Actually the hotel is very nice, clean , 19th century design, the location is perfect, but I would like to highlight some points.. As compare to the price that you pay in that hotel which is expensive than other hotels in the city, the breakfast is extremely poor, seriously I shocked as I did not expect the breakfast would be like a 2 stars hotel , I stayed 2 days, the same types of food with fix menu, not many western choices or even local.
The second issue is the swimming pool, its is very small in a tiny space.
Apart from that the staff were so nice and friendly, housekeeping twice a day..,.

My husband and I stayed here for 2 nights on our first trip to Malacca. From the moment we arrived the service we received was impeccable and personable. We were greeted by our names by every member of staff throughout our stay. Our stay was dotted with small personal treats such as daily local desserts in our room and traditional tea on arrival. The hotel has the colonial charm of a bygone era and not to mention a great cocktail list! The room was very spacious, spotlessly clean with a beautiful open plan bathroom and roll top bath which was heaven plus a large rainshower. Wooden shutters do close across the bathroom if you prefer. We made use of the spa in the hotel and chose the "double cooling package" consisting of local traditional Malay treatments which were just wonderful and thoroughly recommended. We ate breakfast in the hotel as it was included in our room rate. There was a good selection of food predominantly geared towards Asian taste (as you would expect) but the service could have been a little more attentive ( e.g. We had to ask for cutlery, tea coffee refill etc..). This really is nitpicking but as the service was so exceptional in all other aspects of the hotel, we felt this stood out as the only small development area. We would like to make a special reference to Poshan who has exceptional client service skills and demonstrates that he genuinely cares about the guests. In our case, we feel he went beyond his call of duty to ensure we were happy and well taken care of, a rarity in many hotels these days. The hotel location is a 10 - 15 minute walk from the center of town but don't let that put you off staying at The Majestic. A trishaw ride is a fun way to travel and only cost RM25 from the center back to The Majestic. If you can, stay over a weekend to experience the night market in Jonker Street with lots of great food to try. We will return to The Majestic some day, it really was a relaxing escape.

Room Tip: We requested a high floor which provided us with a great view across Malacca. There is some ongoing...
