We stayed there two nights between Christmas and New Years 2012 with three adults and three kids in two rooms.

The location is right along the Melaka river which afforded a nice 15 minute walk to Chinatown and the historical area. Though not as central as some other hotels, we preferred that as the area was more relaxed and quiet (apart from the construction noise nearby during the day).

The hotel is lobby and dining area are in a early 20th century mansion which provided an elegant entrance into the hotel. The rooms are in a modern 10 story tower but the rooms match the mansion quite nicely.

Breakfast came with our package and was excellent.

The rooms are a good size, we had one on the 9th floor and another on the 10th with good views of the Melaka river and the ocean. The only issue we had with the rooms is that the bathroom does not allow for any acoustic isolation - people in the room get to hear everything going on inside.

Room Tip: Take advantage of the free tour guide of the historical areas that the hotel provides.

This is a beautiful hotel with plenty of Old World charm, and feels small and cosy. The feeling takes you back to the days of the colonial era, with a small wooden bar opposite the nice wood-panelled reception counter. There is a comfortable sitting area where you will be walked through the hotel features upon check-in. There is also a "library" on the same floor, for lounging over a tropical drink and a good book. There is also a small sitting area on the patio outside the front door.
The dining room is on the first floor, accessed via a wooden staircase by the receptionist, or the back stairs. The hotel has a small, but appealing outdoor pool.
We stayed over Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, and the hotel seemed fully booked.
The rooms were very nice, well decorated with antique-style fittings and decorations. There is an old-style iron bath tub, with feet, as well as a modern stand-up shower with both a rainshower and hand-held. As mentioned elsewhere, the bathtub seems to be the source of considerable noise as it sounds like it is running right into your room when used in the adjacent room! Generally speaking, I'd say the walls could use better insulation/soundproofing. The bathroom is basically "open concept", with the only form of privacy being a set of tracked louvred doors that can be closed to visually conceal oneself, but not muffle the sounds...

The hotel staff were all extremely friendly and helpful.
We only ate breakfast at the hotel and found the offerings very tasty and well presented. The freshly squeezed orange juice was delightful, but supply seemed to be scarce. As the hotel seemed fully booked, restaurant staff were kept on the run, hence the clearing of dishes, offering of more coffee/tea/orange juice seemed overlooked for an establishment of this quality.

Being a major tourist and world heritage site, we found it a bit puzzling that they did not have a tourist map in the room. A very useful albeit simple photocopied map was available for the asking from the reception desk.

Complimentary parking is available for hotel guests, however it is only accessible from the street behind the hotel.

The hotel is about a 20-minute walk from the Jonkers Street area, and directly adjacent to the Melaka River, which has a boardwalk running it's length. A great place to take a stroll or go jogging.

If it wasn't for the plumbing noises from the adjacent room, we'd probably give this place a five-star rating. We will consider a return stay during a less busy period.

No doubt that this hotel is charming, evoking a by-gone era. The service was excellent, the food very good, our Christmas dinner could not have been better. The rooms were comfortable and well-furnished. All decorations were tastefully done. The lobby was so inviting with a couple of rooms off to the side giving a feel of being in someone's home. We enjoyed tea and scones after a long day and it was the kind of place where you like to relax. However, on our first night, my husband and I were awakened @ 01:30 by a tremendous sound which we realized were our neighbors running their bathtub. We were informed that this is a structural problem with the plumbing which is experienced in almost all rooms; there is no sound proofing around the water pipes. The hotel tries to leave and empty room between the inhabited ones, but during the busy holiday season, this was impossible. So, even though we love the charm of this hotel, we would recommend that you investigate as to how full the hotel is. The hotel could avoid this problem by asking guests not to shower or run the tub after 23:00. The hotel should inform guest about this problem, especially when the rates are what they are.

Room Tip: Beware: no sound-proofing around the plumbing pipes. Also, the rooms are charming, but the bathroom is only separated by slatted, wooden, sliding doors something to consider, especially if you have romance on your mind!

We booked 2 deluxe rooms for 2 nights sightseeing. The hotel's reception and common areas are arranged in a nicely restored traditional house. The rooms are in a new building behind it. Front desk service is good but some minor lapses by restaurant serving staff. Rooms are beautifully arranged and maintained though, bed super comfy. Only 7 rooms on our floor. There are local snacks available for free throughout the reception. Nice little touches like this everywhere. Pool is very small and doesn't get much sun. Location is away from the crowds but that means a 10 min walk from Stadhuys/Jonckers. In all, meets expectations.

A very quaint colonial-style boutique hotel. My partner and I stayed in the Deluxe suite which was extremely comfortable, spacious and tastefully furnished - love the day bed and open-concept bathroom which came with a clawfoot tub. (psst - crabtree & evelyn toiletries)

But I think what stood out the most was the impeccable and friendly service. The staff all seemed very well-trained and would invariably smile and greet us whenever we entered the hotel, and even when they passed by us in the corridors / lift lobby. We were also served chilled towels and a pot of lychee tea upon our arrival. Plus the staff also left us a snack of nyonya kueh (cakes) in our room after the turn down service which was a nice touch.

It's about a 15 minute walk to Jonker Street. Overall, extremely good value for money and I would go back again.
