“Funky little house”
Reviewed June 4, 2014

This dinky little place for 2 is situated in the heart of old Malacca and is surprisingly quiet given its position. It's interior designer-owned and this is reflected in the eclectic decor. Lovely comfortable bed, fans, aircon and efficient shower. It's immaculately clean and housekeeper comes each day (at a time you choose). Coffee machine/tea/milk/bottled water/toiletries all provided. The fruit bowl was a nice touch too.

The only negative is that it's pretty dark downstairs and there's not much you can do about that, given that it's a converted stable and the doors and windows look over and open directly onto the street. However, this is a small point as it's such a characterful place to stay. Sharen, the owner, greeted us and was most helpful with everything during our stay. Make sure you visit her cafe whilst in Malacca!

I've been wanting to stay at this place since TIME magazine published an item on it back in 2011. Pleased to report that it lived up to our expectations & we endorse all of the positive comments that appear in reviews from others. The upstairs bedroom is spacious & delivers on the atmosphere & charm which are hallmarks of this renovated accommodation. Downstairs however, is a little cramped & could do with some more illumination. Infirm seniors might also have an issue with the upstairs access stairs
Two big positives for us were its location (couldn't be more central to the excitement of Jonker Street) and Winnie, the young lady responsible for check-in/check-out & for happily attending to any queries or advice we sought.

We're in Malacca for our 4th anniversary minus our daughter to explore the Jonker street and this guesthouse is right in the middle of it. Inside the place it is a cocoon where you are surrounded by rustic charm of Malacca at turn of century. The bare walls, ancient wooden beam, wooden doors and windows give it a strong personality, i really love it. there were countless of time we found passer by posed and took pictures in front of the facade. This old building really is a restoration job well done with just the right kind of vibes. Complimentary espresso coffee is a nice addition, i just wish for more complimentary mineral water. 2 bottles of 500ml was provided, a few more wouldn't hurt. Ms Sharen and her assistant is also ever accommodating.

Room Tip: A lot of shops in the area closed on Wednesday so it is a quiet day, too quiet. There is a 'tr...

We knew of this place from our friend who recommended it for our 1st wedding anniversary.

Location

The guesthouse is located at Jonker Street itself as it nestled out amongst the pre-war shophouses. If you are driving to Melaka, you can park at the open parking space across Casa Del Rio Hotel that charges daily. It's only 2-3 minutes walk to the guesthouse and few shops away from Calanthe Art Cafe.

You can explore the surrounding Jonker Street and the riverside. A Famosa, Dutch Fort are about 10 minutes walk and Dataran Pahlawan shopping mall is a 15 minutes walk. On Friday,Saturday and Sunday, there's the Night Bazaar surrounding Jonker Street and roads are closed.

The place can be noisy for some couples during the night bazaar as across the street, there's a Mr & Mrs Jones cafe that plays live music and the noises from the bazaar. For us, we were able to sleep right through it even morning, when cars passes the street.

Place

The guesthouse was a former hay and a horse stable and the owners, who are interior designers, converted it to a one room guesthouse for couples.Hence, the place is called The Stable. These are also the same owners who owned Limau Limau Cafe.

On the ground floor, there's the small kitchenette for you to do your tea or coffee making facilities,a small fridge and cutlery and wine glasses for you to use. There's a lovely small table setting for you to relax and the bathroom is located on the ground floor too.Simple bathroom kit with toothbrush, toothpaste, soap, shampoo, lotion, ear buds, shower cap and fresh towels are provided and umbrellas in case it rains.

The bedroom is located upstairs and equipped with a flat screen tv with satellite channels and an iPhone/iPod docking device.

It's fully air-conditioned with fan and the place is cleaned daily.

It is so convenient that we just explored around the area during our 3 days stay.

I recommend this to any couples wanting a personal retreat, home away from home.
