Full marks to Alias and his wife for providing a memorable cycle treck around the countryside outside Melaka. Alias is such a friendly and knowlegable about all aspects of country life.
He took us to and explained to us the various fauna and flora which you find in this part of the world. We had the opportunity to see various animals.
The cycling was fairly easy and a nice pace for all was taken by Alias. We stopped in the local village, took drinks and spoke to the local people who were so welcoming.

We had a great half day with Alias (3h cycling and 40min travel). He clearly adapts his tours depending on people's cycling ability. The bikes were good quality mountain bikes. We cycled a mixture of quiet roads, dirt tracks and single paths through plantations of rubber and palm oil. In addition to seeing people collecting runner and palm nuts, we saw monkeys, birds, a huge centipede and numerous fruits and plants, which Alias explained.

If you've already seen rubber and palm oil plantations, this would make for a boring ride. However, we hadn't, so found it interesting.

It was really nice to get outside of Melaka central and see some of the countryside on this tour. Alias was very knowledgeable, keen and friendly and sensitive to the fact that I had not been on a bike for quite a while, so took it pretty easy. However, he was rather obsessed with the palm oil plantations and went on and on about how fantastic they were in every way while not acknowledging at all the environmental downsides of them. We did learn a heck of a lot more about them, that's for sure and they do use every bit of the plant, but the tour was mostly about this and I expected it to be much more varied.

You can tell he is a very experienced mountain biker and has studied all the flora/fauna & bird life and is great at explaining everything, but I have to agree somewhat with Globad that it is basically a ride around his neighbourhood (though we got a good workout - sore bums for a couple days!) and probably overpriced for the tour - although it seems to be aimed primarily at Europeans/Westerners who wouldn't think £20 for a half-day tour would be too expensive.

What was advertised as a 20 km bike ride around villages and plantations turned out to be a 20 km drive out to the host's property followed by a 3-4 km cycle around neighbouring properties. At RM 100 (the cost of about three days' food and accommodation in a single room with WiFi), I expected far more. A bottle of Tesco-brand water is included, lunch isn't. When touted in the 2008 edition of the Lonely Planet, Melaka On Bike cost RM 50 for the three hour tour - already quite expensive, but almost feasible. Since then Alias, the host, has seemingly exploited the opportunity created by such publicity to DOUBLE the price. In addition to this, the continual dick-ball-boob jokes are a little trying. A four-day jungle trek at Teman Negara or the Cameron Highlands costs about twice this amount; next time I'm in Malaysia I'll be taking that option.

Excellent way to see the country on mountain bikes. Easy paddling going through dirt routes, some 26 km via rubber and palm oil plantations, passing locally grown fruits and spices. Fun and enjoyable. Water bottle provided. Brought our own insect repellent. We were picked up from the hotel at 830am for the day tour, and returned at 130pm. Included in the price is a stop at a coffee shop midway to quench our thirst.
