In November of this year (2013) my wife and I spent three nights at the Queenspark Hotel in Melaka.

Our stay there was a positive experience. The hotel is quite small, which we prefer, since it gives us a chance to get to know the staff and to be treated as people rather than mere numbers. The immediate surrounds are fairly quiet even if you’re a nit-picker and a light sleeper, and we felt quite safe in that locality.

It’s a fair walk (about twenty minutes at a steady pace) to the actual city centre – the area where all the touristy action is – and if you’re not into walking (and don’t have a car) you’ll need to factor in a few taxi fares.

The tariff, which is extremely reasonable, includes breakfast, and the breakfast fare is quite varied, plentiful, healthy and nourishing.

The hotel offers Internet access, for a modest charge based on time used.

The room size (we booked a standard twin) was adequate though not large; the toilet area/wet bathroom was quite generous in size, although the instant electric hot water system was, in our case, erratic: swinging from too hot to too cold. This could well have been an isolated case.

Our room had its own safe, and I imagine this feature is standard in all rooms.

Our room was clean, as was the bathroom/toilet area, linen and towels.

Staff were, by and large, friendly and welcoming. This was particularly true of Kenny Hendricks, one of this hotel’s real assets – I hope senior staff recognize it!

The one outstanding negative was the beds. They’re quite the narrowest single beds we’ve ever encountered in a hotel in Malaysia, and management should consider something more generous I think – although the room size will limit what’s possible.

As I’ve remarked on another occasion (about another hotel in another part of Malaysia) Queenspark Hotel is not a luxury hotel: if you want the Barbra Streisand treatment you’ll need to look elsewhere. However, for a person who wants a clean, safe, comfortable place to sleep each night, a genuinely hearty and nourishing breakfast each morning, and courteous friendly staff to return to after a day exploring Melaka, this hotel is a bargain at the price. We would happily stay there again.

Checked in late evening and be given a room without window at lobby floor. Air conditioner need to adjust manually for the direction of air and that was troublesome. Only can control the temperature. Up at the ceiling, there were mould markings all over it. Felt grossed when looking up.
The food, not really good. Malay cuisine. Overall, ok la...

Friendly staff overall. The room was OK, when I finally found it - the layout of the floor is a bit of a labyrinth. I didn't experience any noise at all; the only sound was the whirr of the air con. However, small details made my overview impression less than stellar: A cup with clear lip marks on it (ewww... should've been caught by the people filling up the room); a shower cap with burn marks on it (what???) and no tea bags, only instant coffee in the room. There might be many more coffee drinking guests that tea drinkers, but would it hurt so much to put just a single teabag on the tray? Breakfast mostly consists of various Asian rice and noodle dishes - very filling, albeit quite oily, and they will keep you going for quite a while (there are chicken sausages and baked beans for those who find chicken curry in the morning too much).

The entrance to this hotel is nice, and very green. It was confusing to find our room 216, as there were no proper signs. The walkway to our room smelt smoky. I was quite disappointed that the rooms did not have keycard system but knobs. For the price we were paying RM 118 with breakfast was quite reasonable. Staff was helpful when needed extra pillows, ironing board and hair dryer.
apart from that, its good enough to sleep, and toilet is big and clean.

Melaka is dotted with a variety of budget inns etc. This however stood out, in my experience of budget hotels, in terms of cleanliness of rooms, toilet and overall look and feel.

Pros
- Stayed in a smaller room on the first night, which was literally a hole in the wall with no windows. However, it was still surprisingly comfortable.
-Got a better room the second night, with laminated floors and tons of space.
-Beds are spring mattresses, so very comfy as with pillows
-Quiet
-ok spread of breakfast.
- Professional and well versed staff, who were able to answer queries well.

Cons
- Slightly out of the way, and requires a car to get around with no shuttle services to Jonker walk. Jonker walk is a good 25 minute walk away, while its closer to Merdeka Square and main shopping centres (10-15 minutes walk).
-Some rooms have no windows, which can be claustrophobic. If there are views, generally its just the streets.
- Can get a bit noisy at night as its near some karaoke/pub joints.

Can be quite busy as they cater to sometime noisy tourists. However, still affordable and well appointed for less than RM100 a room. Recommended for a short break.

Room Tip: Get a room with a window. And best to call ahead to book, as you might not get a room as a walk in.

I was in Melaka city recently for a business trip. I booked this hotel because every other hotels had been either full or not offering a promotion during that period. The location of this hotel is not bad, it's within 1 km walking distance from Mahkota Parade or Pahlawan Mall. There's no issue with eateries, there are plenty in Melaka.

As for the room itself, it is quite small. Quite crowded if you travel in 3. Basic utilities such as an electric kettle and TV are provided too. However, there is a small elevator for guests that makes life easy. :)

Nothing much I can describe about this hotel. For a more spacier budget hotel with the same rate, I would suggest Iris Hotel or La Boss which is just accross the road.
