“A few mishap but the place itself is lovely”
Reviewed April 19, 2014 via mobile

For a place that is run by the owner itself I dont find any welcoming gesture during check in. Well yes she is accomodating but friendly ? As in welcoming you to her house ? No. But the place oh boy. Lovely. From the deco, to even the smallest detail. Five star for the Melaka vibes.
Plus point is that its very near to our favorite coconut shake, jonker street and other attraction. And you'll never find a place quite like this.
However, I hardly get to sleep at night. Dogs barking from the neighbourhood all night. And its my bad luck that theres a very large group of Indian family staying on the ground floor right below us. The noise they make you can never imagine. When they leave I feel like jumping in the air.
Mosquitos can be quite a problem. In the room, bathroom, lobby, garden. Will advice anyone to bring insect repellent.
Do remember that not all room are four poster bed as they promised in their website. Just a few. Very few I supposed. If its your luck then youll get one. Or you can request in advanced.
Overall, I might be staying here again, only on weekdays where the rate is cheaper and crossing finger there wont be any large group staying.

We had a terrific stay of four nights at Cyclamen Cottage. Rather than staying near the buzz of Jonker Street, we much preferred the quiet environment a little outside of it all to enjoy a relaxed, freshly prepared breakfast. On the first day, Chris, the owner, was so nice to give us a ride into town and was eager to share some of his detailed knowledge of the Chinese ("peranakan") history and the city's Colonial background. Our room was quiet and comfortable, and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The only thing to note is that the local busses run without an apparent schedule and not very frequently. We usually preferred the 30-45 min. walk rather than waiting for a bus to show up. For a longer stay, you would probably want your own transportation. There is an excellent food court with amazing and very affordable local dishes. Try the assorted fried donuts for less than one Ringit each!!

We had a good time staying in this nice inn.

Our first impression of this place was actually not good. The room we booked is much smaller than we expected and have no window. We used Hostelworld for booking and used Agoda for room information because Hostelworld doesn't charge service fees (17%) but has no room information. The smallest room on Agoda is 32 square meters which is more than enough. The one we got (the cheapest on Hostelworld) is only about 10 square meters. At the time of booking, I didn't notice that those are two different rooms. I think this could be confusing to other travellers.

We were able to upgrade to a bigger room but were not given the choice of the second floor or the newer building. (We were told that they were fully booked which I don't believe is true based on online availability)

This is not to say that the room we got was not nice. It is actually very beautifully decorated with antique furnitures. The old building we stayed at has a very nice herb garden which is great for breakfast. The breakfast itself is also wonderful. The sausages and butter used are better than many other B&Bs and there are also delicious sweets and fruits.

The best thing about this inn is the owner Chris. When he has time, he would drive us to the town and give us lots of useful information about what to see and do in Melaka. He also gave us a tour of his private museum across the street, which is really wonderful. I think it is actually better than the public museums in town. This one feels more real life and authentic.

For us, the main problem is the location. The distance to Jonker street is about 2.5 km, which doesn't seem much. But with the hot Melaka air, you don't want to walk 30 minutes in the day time and the street is not very safe to walk. There is a bus stop very close by but it is hard to catch one due to the short hours and lack of any route information.

So we end up spending quite a bit on taxi because we have to make two trips to town everyday (our kid need to nap).

In summary, I would highly recommend this place if you love heritage building and antique furnitures. You will also love Chris as a person and his passion for what he does. The only exception is if you have a kid who needs to nap and no vehicle to get around, then I would say it is probably better to stay in town.

Room Tip: Do not book the cheapest room on Hostelworld.

We had a lovely stay here. Staff were so helpful and friendly, taking us into town to orient us to the highlights. Rooms were very clean and comfortable and the antiques around the place gave a lovely charm. We stayed in a kind of annexe which had a lovely indoor/outdoor pool. Breakfast included in the lovely garden. It is a little way out of the hustle and bustle of Melaka - easy to get back from Melaka to the hotel, but not always from the hotel elsewhere!

Room Tip: some noisy dogs in the muslim neighbourhood!

Not the usual "hotel feel". Feel at home with friendly owner who will make breakfast for you. Good location - quiet - away from town and traffic. Very clean room and greenery. You can get very good sleep. Just take 10 min drive using the coastal way to reach Jonkar Walk and for shopping. Near to klebang beach + famous Klebang coconut milk shake + evening sunset by the beach + seafood dinner.

Room Tip: Stay 2nd floor - quieter

I am looking for cottage to stay instead of Hotel in Malacca which i found cottage is more friendly and feels like a home. Before this trip, i actually staying in another cottage but unfortunately, this time is a bit too rush and it is fully booked.

I get some time to search this cottage and i considered between Cyclamen and others budget hotel which is a bit cheaper. However, at the end i decided to stay into this cottage and I AM NOT REGRET AT ALL. It will definitely my first choice if i need to visit malacca again. It is very comfortable and clean with a lot of antique decoration. If you like traditions taste and homestay idea, it will be ideal for you to stay here.

I would say backpacker will like this place but due to their location is quite far from main street, therefore if you has no car, you need to pay more for transportation. Previously i saw some comment about their breakfast services is worse but for me is just enough. Never compare their home cook with stars hotel, limited selection is for sure but is nice and enough for your morning refreshment.

Very small matter i faced is Cyclamen is just straight after the main street corner. If some of "noisy turbo car" or motorbike is speeding, it might disturbed your sleeping mood. You will never afraid you couldn't wake up in the morning, the Muslim Mosque is just nearby and their morning praying will somehow wake you up (it is not a big deal, if you enjoyed the Malaysian local culture).

Room Tip: Their upstairs floor is made by wood, i think ground floor is better choice.

It was a last minute booking as we usually stay in Holiday Inn or Equatorial hotel and they are all fully booked.
I wish to thank the contributors here, if not for them I wouldn't have found such a fantastic place to stay.
I am very particular abt cleanliness and I must say that they deserve 5* . They have done a better job than the 5* hotels in Malacca.
