“Food definitely at par with Capitol but cheaper, better ambience and less queue”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 19, 2011

Why go to Capitol Satay Celup when most Malaccan locals come here to enjoy their food? Slightly further from Jonker Street (located on the same road as HSBC). In my opinion, Capitol caters more for tourist customers. Price wise it is so much more reasonable at RM0.60/stick vs RM0.80/stick. You still get the same food such as fish balls, sausages and so on. The peanut gravy tasted average and slightly more spicier compared to Capitol. Don't have to really wait long for a table. There are plenty of car parks at the opposite of the restaurant.
However currently there are 2 restaurants by the same name competing each other. Don't be fooled that it is the same establishment side by side. The original owner (Restoran Ban Lee Siang - left hand side) and the competitor (Kedai Makanan & Minuman Ban Lee Siang - right hand side). The competitor is actually the former staff of the original owner. The former staff learnt all the satay sauce recipes and decided to start his own business. I would say both are equally as good. Competition is healthy so the price will remain the same for a while.

“Nice satay celup but....”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 31, 2011

Well this restaurant is growing since yrs ago. It wasnt the best either but wasnt bad too. The problem is that the sauce was not replaced all the time, so hygenic wise....if you dont mind, it is still ok. As compare with Capitol, the sauce is a bit spicier but not as thich as Capitol. For some, me especially...I think Ban Lee Hiang is more worth it compare to Capitol.

“Satay celup without the queue”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 22, 2011

Having been to Melaka twice, and both times witnessing the tremendously l-o-n-g queue outside Capitol Satay (*nothing* can be worth queuing for 1 hour!), we decided to try this place on Jalan Ong Kim Wee. We drove - it's a little way out from the historic town centre. Arriving at 615 am, most of the tables were taken.. but at least there wasn't a queue. Food on skewer's is placed in self-service refrigerators. The sauce is served in a ever bubbling pot placed in the centre of the table, and you dunk in the skewered tit-bits. A reasonable variety of food, with most sticks at standard price. Some food choices felt like less value than others.. Ambience was noisy, and it was sometimes congested around the fridge area. The sauce was nutty, with spicy notes. It was less rich and creamy than traditional satay sauce. Overall, we enjoyed the experience and the bill came to RM$60 for four adults.
The sauce is definitely recycled between diners. However, having said which, as it's continuously boiling throughout, there aren't any microbial issues - it's just a matter of the "yuck" factor.
Not having ever made it to Capitol Satay, I can't compare it to the ever popular standard - some blogs say the variety and size of the skewers is better at Capitol. But for me - the lack of a queue is the main selling point!

“plenty of locals having their satay celup here”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 21, 2009

Having read some negative reviews about Capitol Satay, and not wishing to queue and and fight with the crowd, we decided to try satay celup here. There were many locals eating here. Next door is Teow Chew Satay Celup, which, for whatever reason, had not a single customer while we were there. Most sticks cost 0.50RM each while some cost 0.60RM. At the end of the meal, the sticks were counted in front of us. Overall, a good experience if you wish to try the local satay celup. The restaurant is located along Jalan Ong Kim Wee, which is a one-way street.
