“a True Clean Hostel (which is a rare thing)”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 19, 2010

After travelling for almost six months I was wondering whether proper cleanliness could be combined with affordability. Kenny, the owner of Apa Kaba shows it can be done. We paid 40 (85 with a/c) Ringgit which was a bargain considering the dedication, courteous and warm welcome of this lovely space just five minutes away from all the main sites in Melaka.

Apakaba is an old family home that is converted into a charming homestay. It has a fantastic huge garden with mango trees right in the middle of a malay village but within walking distance to all the major attractions like A Formosa , Jonker street and Stadhuys.

I went with my family and group of ex-university mate. We took all the three airconditioned rooms. The two main rooms had attached bathrooms , were very comfortable and for RM 80-99 per room , it was a bargain. The third room didnt have an attached bath room but the toiled and shower was just outside.

For those who like the old style bath using the small pail, there is the traditional bathroom which my hubby used because he still like the cold water drenching. The owner says they provide sarongs for an added rustic feel .

I took the non-aircondition rooms for the kids . It looked rather stuffy because you cant open the windows for fear of mosquitoes and of course , the human stalkers. However, the owners had a vent fan and it rained that night so it wasnt that bad .

The place is new and run by a retired teacher couple and their son, a Muslim convert. Their knowledge of all the best food and the hospitality added to the charm of the place. It made up for some of the minor complaints like wet shoes because of the downpour ...

What I like about this place - the owners have tried to retain its old world charm as much as they can yet providing the modern amenities like clean toilets and air-conditioning. The kampung style windows, the open air courtyard, an old sewing machine, the old floor tiles. It only cost us less than RM300 or US88 for a group of 8 adults and three kids...and the location - fantastic. With all the one way streets and a complicated road system - walking is the best..

As the place is limited in rooms i.e . 3 airconditioned rooms and 3 non-aircondition - publicity have been mainly from word of mouth and internet. You can find the contact in facebook under ApaKaba
