“Teochew Foodies Please Stand Up!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 16, 2014 via mobile

TCL is truly a Teochew foodie paradise. U can easily missed it from the outside though it's near popular Jonker, quaint enough neighbourhood with funeral house as nearby neighbours.

ADVANCE BOOKING is a MUST and be prepared to be disappointed with the lack of customer service at times. But who cares when the food it that good and the ambience so unique. First the cooking is done semi outdoor at the entrance and you see all the available raw food in the open fridge next to your table.

Must eats include, sublime steam pomfret fish, braised oyster noodles, pork ribs with bitter gourd, minced prawn fritters, their delectable "Or Née" (mashed sweet Yam dessert) and washed down with their fresh watermelon juice and saccharin-sweet fresh mangoes.

OK, got to go and change out of my saliva-drenched T-shirt!

“The only regret is that we couldn't eat more”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 4, 2014

We were 2 people only, so we couldn't order a lot of stuff. Going by the recommendations here, we ordered the oyster noodle, the sweet wine chicken, and the or nee.

We were very impressed with the chicken, it was sweet and savoury and aromatic all at once. Although my partner likes the oyster noodle very much, I thought it was good only - I will skip this dish and save my stomach space for others in future.

We were both impressed by the or nee. I felt it was a little subdued, but it was a very fresh or nee nevertheless. I also liked that it wasn't too sweet. This is probably one of the last place you can eat a traditionally prepared or nee, so I savoured the experience.

Both the boss and the young staff were very nice. The food is well worth the money, but you should know that it is a little more pricey than restaurants in the same area. The restaurant is always full or fully booked. So it's best to walk over and make a reservation earlier in the day.
Opens Tuesday - Sunday, 12.3-2pm, then 6-9.30pm. Highly recommended!

“Hidden Jewel of the yesteryears!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 29, 2014 via mobile

First & foremost, this restaurant will required at least two weeks in advance for reservation on weekends and/or public holiday. Other days, it's good if you give the, a call before going there to avoid disappointment. Strategically located in the heart of Jonker street community & they have introduced open kitchen concpet at the entrance before many high end eateries adopting it! We have a table of ten and was greeted by their fifth generation, Tan jr. Signature dishes were suggested and it takes a while before the food is served. Once the first dish arrived, the rest are pretty prompt. We had the braised oyster noodle as a start, taste pretty unique but you must add in the black vinegar to brings up the flavour. Braised TeoChew duck with tofu, Braised bitter gourd with pork ribs, steamed fish TeoChew style, steamed TeoChew dumpling, Deep fried meat dumpling & stirred fried dragon beard vege are in our order list. Reasonable portion and taste good. Finally is the classic house dessert, yam paste with Ginko nuts and pumpkin, absulautely delicious ...highly recommend. The senior Tan once said " if any of you didn't eat at Teo Soon Loong Chan, you've not been to Melaka! "

“Great discovery (and best "or-ngee") @ Jonkers St, Melaka”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 22, 2014

Visited Melaka with friends and they brought us to this small hidden gem. We ate:
Back noodles with baby oysters
Claypot chicken in wine source
Hey-chor (deep fried meat and prawn balls)
Clams in chilli
Steam promfet
2 green vegetables
And finally the best or-ngee I have eaten - teochew style - one single slice of pumpkin and light grey yam paste. Its not oily and not too sweet. Super!
We need to try the roast piglet on our next visit.

Its a small and cosy restaurant with just 8 tables - reminds me of the small and quaint equivalent restaurants we have come across in Europe.

Its now run by the third gen family - young man who took over from his dad (who took over from his) The grand dad is now fully retired. The dad is still the main chef. The son looks a bit like Romeo Tan (the mediacorp channel 8 artist - in my opinion, but my kids would disagree with me ...LOL).

“Old School”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 17, 2014

Booked a couple of weeks before the meal. We are early for our booking but the staff is ok with it. Have Oyster Noodles, Roast Suckling Pig, Steam Fish, Stir Fried Vegetables and Or Nee (Yam Paste) for dessert. Small outlet. Quick service. Great food. Dislike the hidden charges such as peanut and wet tissues (Dad has a issue with this).
