“lived up to our expectations... and more!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 21, 2013

I’d like to begin by saying that I am very, very surprised by the reviewers who didn’t like the service at the Fern Gardinia — as far as my husband and I are concerned, we had nothing but excellent service during the 3 nights we stayed at the hotel… the front desk staff, the dining room waiters, the cleaning ladies — ALL the staff, without exception, were pleasant, efficient, and helpful, in other words, very professional… our room (the Hazel Suite) was spacious and clean, the Internet connection was very good (and free!), and there was free bottled water in our room every day… the most pleasantly surprising thing about the Fern Gardinia is the quality of the restaurant! before leaving Canada, my husband made a list of restaurants where we could have dinner in the evening but, after eating at the Fern Gardinia, we decided to dine there all three nights… the only thing lacking, but that’s a problem particular to India in general and not to this hotel specifically, is a selection of foreign wines…the hotel is within walking distance of several beaches (we even walked to Cola beach about 12 km away!) but if you don’t like to walk, there’s a free shuttle bus to a nearby beach… if we return to Goa in the future we will definitely return to the Fern Gardinia.

Room Tip: the Hazel Suite is the largest, and close to the restaurant but still very quiet

Enjoying our stay of three weeks, the hotels cottages are comfortable and have everything you need. There are eighteen cottages, around a pool and garden , there are three categories to choose from, we are in the green room cottage which is smaller than the others and does not have a fridge. But you can use the fridge in the little bar by the breakfast room, so no problems. Nice modern TV , rooms cleaned daily by excellent staff, who smile and are most helpful, as are all the other staff members.
Its about three quarters of mile from beach , hotel provides free transfers up to six pm, although we do walk to it most days. Sun beds and chairs are free on the beach they are owned by different cafes , and you can use them all day so long as you buy a drink.. If you are looking for peace and tranquility , this is the one for you.

Room Tip: The more expensive rooms get booked up quickly , so decide what you prefer well in advance, but ours...

For a 3 star resort I would say that the Fern Gardenia offers luxury accomodation at an affordable price. Set in beautiful grounds, with a lovely pool area, this tranquil resort is a great base for exploration of the local area. It is situated far enough away to be a peaceful haven, yet it is only a 5 minute tuk tuk ride from the restaurants and bars of Palolem beach. The hotel provide a complimentary tuk tuk to the beach between the hours of 9am and 6pm. The tuk tuk ride is only 60 rupees anyway so even if you paid yourself, it isn't going to break the bank.
The cabins are well equipped with A/C, LCD TV, a digital safe and tea/coffee making facilities. Beds are comfortable and the bedding is changed every 3 days or on request. In the rooms there is a lack of wardrobe space but it isn't a major downfall. There is only a fridge in the larger deluxe cabins which again isn't a major issue unless you want to store milk etc. Bathrooms are nice with an excellent shower.
The food at the Fern Gardenia isn't amazing, although there are a few dishes on the slightly small menu that are nice. Breakfast is what you make of it, there isn't a massive choice, but you can order any style of egg or omelette you like. After eating breakfast in other restaurants in the area it's pretty much the same throughout.
We found the service of a high standard. Ok, the pool bar isn't manned all the time, but this is probably due to the fact that the pool area doesn't get busy enough to having a staff member being sat there doing nothing. Having only visited in January, I don't know if this the case during other months. However, the restaurant is only a short walk away and then they will bring your order to wherever you want.
The staff are courteous, always happy to help and are a real credit to this lovely resort. We will return.

3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 25, 2013

My husband and I stayed here for a few nights recently after staying in a beach bungalow for four days as we wanted to do a half/half rough it/resort style holiday. The fern gardenia is a beautifully set, relaxing place to stay, rooms are clean and nice, although the winter garden rooms look a lot bigger in the pictures and don't have fridges or wifi- which is only available in the common areas of the resort. The pool is lovely, and the jungle setting great, I also liked the free shuttle to the main village/beach, however having to call the hotel to arrange pick up is just as expensive as the 60 rupee rickshaw ride back from the village if you don't have an Indian mobile phone so it's a shame they don't run regular pick ups or that you can't tell them the time you want to be collected when you leave for the village.
The included breakfast is limited but I've found that everywhere in India and Asia. The rest of the food we had from the bar menu and room service were great, especially the chicken fried rice!
The main problem we found from the beginning and throughout the stay here is a lack of service at every turn. From having to call reception twice to get a room service menu (then having to actually just go to the restaurant ourselves to get one), to having to call for our room service bill, then our change, or even having to wait fifteen minutes to be attended to at the bar by the pool- not to mention waiting ten minutes for a beer as they seemed to not stock the pool bar- the service was disappointing from start to finish for such a nice resort. Why they have a pool bar that isn't stocked so the bar tender has to go to the restaurant to make the drinks is beyond me... Plus it's rare that the pool bar is even manned so there doesn't seem to be a point to having it really. There are staff everywhere during the day but it takes asking two or three times to get anything done or order food or drinks. It could be that there is a lack of understanding between staff and guests- many staff don't speak any English- or that they don't see customer service as a high priority. It was a major let down for us and became a runnig joke throughout our stay- having to call reception or room service two or three times and allow an hour to have anything done (eg, to be shown how the complex shower worked, to fix our broken safe, to have food delivered to the room) which is pretty terrible.
Unfortunately I wouldn't stay here again, even for the lovely tranquil setting. The service isn't good enough to return.
