Hi,

I am a female and stayed here with another female colleague of mine for a Business trip and were first misguided by the management about the distances to our event venue. We had to get housekeeping to fix issues every few minutes such as Air conditioning not working twice and no water in the shower. The worst of all, our privacy was seriously violated when the staff we recognized from house keeping started peeping into our bathroom while one of us was showering. This is not just shocking but entirely disturbing and given that the rooms had no latches, locks whatsoever, we were completely at their mercy.

Once our company made enough noise about it, the management committed that they will provide us security through the night which was nowhere visible to us.

I would never recommend this to anyone and am appalled by this perverted behavior. Peeping Toms do not fit into "3-Star" hotel environments so obviously you need to go there at your own risk.

Thanks.

We had booked a Winter Cottage here at the The Fern. It was quite cosy and clean.
Courteous staff and no complaints about the service.
However, there was a problem with the power. There was frequent load shedding and the back-up generator was used only in the evening.
Also, the breakfast was not so good. They served shriveled sausages and stale bread in the buffet!
Overall Experience: 6/10

stayed here for 3 nights with my husband and loved it. we were originally staying in a beach hut but found the barking beach dogs and mosquitos too much. this place is a complete haven away from the noise of palolem beach yet within 2 mins jouney in a rickshaw (wouldnt walk it though would take aroud 20 minutes) they offer free transport to the beach throughout the day and the pool was quiet and so relaxing away from the annoying beach sellers. we had lunch here too and food was of high standard. this was the only place we found that offered the right balance between not being in a big chain hotel but not roughing it on the beach a real gem

We were planning a first holiday in Goa and found it hard – there seemed to be lots of those soulless big resorts (no way) and huts on the beach (we like a bit more comfort now) and not a lot in between. Finally we focused on S Goa, especially the Palolem/Patnem area. Suddenly we saw a couple of good reviews on Tripadvisor for a new hotel that had only just opened. The introductory b&b rates were good so we booked for 10 days in Jan/Feb. By the time we left for Goa there were some new less favourable reviews so we wondered what we’d find. When we arrived we were unpacking and getting hotter and hotter – the aircon was just blowing hot air around. But from there on we had a great time. Rather than put us in one of the slightly smaller standard cabins the manager upgraded us to one of the bigger cabins – much more space, a fridge and bigger TV, very nice!

Location: we really liked being a little inland. We never saw any mosquitoes and it was really quiet at night – none of those howling dogs you get round the beaches. The weather was so perfect that we slept with the aircon off every night. When we walked out of The Fern we’d nearly always get a tuktuk at once, usually just Rs50-70 plus tip to Palolem or Patnem. We also liked walking into Palolem in the evening past the paddy fields (we had a torch each and there are quite a few street lights). It’s under 20 mins walk to the near end of the beach and even the near end of Patnem was under 30 mins walk. We tended to spend the days at Patnem, a lovely beach, particularly as we brought our own beach umbrella. For lunch there we liked Magic View, Hidden Gourmet, April 20 and Home. For a change we went to Turtle (Galgibaga) Beach one day and had delicious crab and lobster at Surya’s for not a lot of money. In the evenings we tended to go to Palolem where we liked meals at Ciaran’s, Marron, Magic Italy, Alessandro’s and Dropadi. Oceanic, inland from Patnem Beach serves excellent food too. Money can be an issue (no ATM in Palolem or Patnem) but we were fine converting sterling cash and travellers cheques at travel agents at the beach – good rates too.

Facilities: The Fern has just 18 wooden cottages, which heat up fast in the sun but also cool fast with aircon. They are set around the pool in lovely gardens, which will provide more shade when mature but which look really good already. The breakfasts were very good – most days it’s waiter service and you can more or less ask for what you want, eg poached egg with grilled tomato & mushrooms (not on the menu). The freshly made juices were great, almost smoothies. Other meals we had there were also really tasty and reasonably priced. The free wifi was great, as we had a baby laptop with us and I had all our photos online before we left. The pool is quite big and was a perfect temperature. They try to get non-residents in during the day with a lunch and swim deal but that never bothered us – we were usually down the beach and had the pool more or less to ourselves late afternoons. There is a lack of bed chairs and shade if the pool’s full but more of both are on order and it never affected us. Inside the cabins it feels quite private (none are joined) and there was enough storage, seating etc in ours. Also free tea and coffee by the kettle and a free bottle of water daily. There were a few power cuts but it always seemed to come on again within a few seconds and didn’t affect the laptop. Our cabin was also at the end of the line for hot water but the system’s being replaced for next season, so A for effort and we always got a hot shower in the end. Being Goa we didn’t get upset at the little glitches. There are quite a few staff and we found all of them, from the manager down, to be friendly and helpful. They also seem proactive in fixing teething problems, eg one day a carpenter was going round trimming doors, and they were already planning a complete new hot water system.

Clientele: Indians and foreigners tended to come and go for quite short stays and we felt like old timers after 10 very enjoyable days. It’s a place well suited to people who want something upmarket from the beach huts but who really do not want to end up in one of those huge resorts. It’s safe and child friendly. The location could seem a problem, not being on the beach, but we found it ideal having the peaceful nights but with easy access to Patnem and Palolem.

We stayed here for 2 nights whilst travelling as we wanted a nice place to stay for my birthday, rather than some of the less classy places we were used to. Having looked at the website we though it looked ace, and there was also a special rate, presumably because it was newly opened.

When we arrived the staff were attentive, we got welcome drinks and they checked us in with no real problems. The cottages are really nicely presented, and well laid out around a nice pool (that could do with a clean). Nothing really bad to say about them at all.

The first thing we noticed that wasn't quite right is, as somebody else mentioned, the fact that they advertised on their website as being 500m from the beach. This is kind of true, in that they might very well be 500m as the crow flies. After a half hour of walking around and asking people, we realised it's more like 1 - 2 km away. Weren't too impressed with that, considering it's basically a lie.

Next was the breakfast. We turned up the first morning and where told we could have breakfast but would be charged 200 rupees for it because it finished at 10:30am. We declined and said we would go somewhere else, when we got back the room it was 10:32. This means that we were late by something between 30 and 60 seconds and he tried to charge us for it. If we had the time on us when he said it I don't think we would have been so polite and would like to have known his response. The next day when we did make it, we ordered eggs, juice and coffee. The eggs came and were alright, then the juice came, about 10 minutes afterwards. After asking 2 different staff members our coffee finally arrived after about another 10 minutes and there wasn't even enough for two people. This is strange as there was about 5 or 6 staff members all working in the kitchen, but somehow between them they managed to cock up eggs and coffee.... We did put this to the manager on check out, and he did say that the staff had only been working there for two days, so they might have gotten their act together by now.

On check out, we were charged for the 'minibar'. We didn't realise it was a minibar as there was nothing saying it was, nor was there any price list anywhere in the room. We just assumed it was some complimentary nuts and biscuits next to the kettle, like you receive in many other mid-range places. We told the manager and he wasn't too bothered, just told his staff to go and put price lists in.

Pool bar and spa weren't open when we stayed there, so can't comment.

A couple of the staff could do with a lesson in not staring at women in their swimming gear. It's kind of expected when you're on the beaches, but not when you're at a resort.

We had high expectations of this place before we went and unfortunately Fern just didn't live up to it. It might be a nice place in a year or two, once the staff gain some experience, and if they change their website to something that resembles the real distance from the beach.

The positives..the cottages are lovely, clean and well presented. The pool and gardens are well kept. Complimentary Goa times delivered in the morning. Junior staff were very polite and helpful when not being mismanaged by the huge army of higher ranking staff.

The negatives...it is a 25min walk to the beach or a 50rupees tuk tuk/taxi -ride more like 1- 1.5km not 500ms as info says (unless you can fly).
As reviewer said below nothing offered but Eggs/miniscule soggy toast and cornflakes/fruit for breakfast. Also curtly informed that B&B didn't include breakfast on the last day (?) No menus provided and on the basis of breakfast definitely didn't try any other food. Minor maintenance issues with cottage completely ignored. On checkout basically accused of minibar charges/restaurant charges that weren't ours in the most impolite way possible.
Pool bar/Spa weren't open when we stayed.
Rates are really quite expensive for what's on offer. Management seem to think their only duty is to be rude to the junior staff. They really seem to have created an unrelaxing atmosphere compared to the other places we stayed in Goa.
If you really want nearly Western style comforts near Palolem then stay here, if you want a relaxed Goa beach holiday, i would find somewhere else.

We stayed at the Fern in November and found the place idylic. The rooms are well laid and very clean as everything is brand new. Nothing is too much trouble for the staff. The pool is lovely. Towels for the pool are provided. The property is surrounded by forestry and is close to Palolem Beach. The Chef is lovely and will accomodate your needs. It is best suited to couples due to the layout. We would not hesitate to return to the Resort.
