I went over to Goa with friends from college, and we were on a tight budget. This is one of the most inexpensive places to stay, yet within a stone's throw from Baga beach. Baga-Calangue, by the way is the most happening of the beaches at Goa. Villa Fatima is clean, bare basic accomodation. There is hot water in the rooms. You have resonably priced food, coffee etc. For those who can do with no-frills living, this is it. There is some parking space for your two-wheelers (that are easily available for hire just outside the hotel - Note: Bargain hard).
It is a simple, family run hotel. Don't expect room service. There were no phones/intercom in the rooms. If you need anything, its easier to just amble down to the canteen in the courtyard. Perhaps it helped that we were on the ground floor.
I had the right hand corner room ontthe ground floor which I shared with a friend (In fact we had four contiguous rooms on the right hand side on the ground floor, just behind the office for the nine of us: 4 guys and 5 girls). The rooms seem dark during the day, but are cool for a nap when you return after the a roasting in the sun. I wish they were more brightly lit at night. There are West facing balconies that bring you the sea breeze, the late afternoon sunlight, and you can dry your clothes there. (By the way, be prepared to do a lot of washing. Sea water creates a peculiar smell in your clothes and leaves spots. It is best to wash them and leave them to dry. There night be a laundry service...we did not use it.)
Being family run, the place feels homely. We enjoyed our stay definitely.
If I go to Goa again, I would like to stay at the same place. After all you don't go to Goa to stay indoors. Rather than splurging on luxury, you can always save your money for the 'Feni' - the local drink, or divine food which is served at the shacks on the beaches, for some extra shopping, or an extra mile or two on two wheels!
Getting there: By the way, if you are coming to Goa from Mumbai, don't take a filght. Take the Janshatabdi 5:30 am or the Mandovi Exp. 6:30 am...The Konkan railway presents amazing views on the way there. Don't miss it at any cost. Alight at Thivim (not Madgaon) for Baga beach and Villa Fatima.
When you come to Goa, you don't feel like going away!
