“Fabulous in every way”
Reviewed April 27, 2010

We stayed five nights at the Taj Exotica, escaping Delhi in a volcano-caused exile. We'd eaten at the restaurant a couple of years before when staying in a small guest-house in Benaulim, so we knew we were in for an amazing hotel. Given such high expectations, it was easy for the hotel to fall short, but it didn't and we were still wowed.

Every aspect of our stay was perfect in every way. The room, a deluxe room with a patio and a hot-tub, was large and comfortable with plush and luxurious bed linen and comfortable air conditioning. So as a result, we slept perfectly every night. Given the proximity of the sea, the pool and the spa, we didn't bother with the hot tub, so the upgrade that put us in that room wasn't entirely appreciated. That said, the upgrade also included full board, which was very much appreciated.

Food at the restaurants (we ate this time at the Coffee Shop, but previously ate in the Italian restaurant) was excellent and removed any prejudice we might have had of eating from a buffet. Cocktails are well made and, by the standards of 5-star hotels in India, reasonably priced.

The spa is well worth a visit and we had head massages that were incredibly relaxing.

Service at the pool and on the beach is superb, though some people sitting near us on the beach seemed to get quite upset about being pestered by hawkers every 30-60 minutes whilst on the beach. The hawkers are harmless, friendly and actually keep their distance from the back of the beach where the hotel's chairs are. Prices are bonkers by local standards, but still a fraction of European prices.

We stayed at the Taj in April 2010. We were there for two weeks as we were delayed by the Iceland Volcano issue. This is probably the best hotel we have ever stayed in during our travels, I cannot fault it at all. Beginning with the staff and general level of service, wonderful, the staff are attentive and treat you as individuals and not as an unknown guest, they know your name and are very willing to go the extra mile to give top service. The housekeeping staff keep the rooms clean and tidy and will provide extra bottled water and other supplies as needed.

Food: exceptional choices. The breakfast buffet has a very wide selection from european choices to local dishes, omeletes pancakes and waffles are cooked to order. The evening buffet is good quality again with a wide and varied selection. However the Lobster Shack (freshly cooked fish to order) and the Italian restaurant are excellent. The fish at Lobster Shack varies from day to day, you are able to select what you want and how it is cooked. Everything is very well presented. The menu in the Italian is of a high quality and the extras that are served really make the meal. There is also a Chinese and Goan option both of which are equally good.

We stayed on a half board basis so did not eat outside the hotel but there is a selection of beach shacks in the area all of which had positive comments from others who used them. If you are on half board you will have to pay a supplement for some dishes in the Lobster Shack and Italian.

Drinks are a bit pricey but not excessive.

The facilities in the hotel are great, the grounds are well kept, the pool is spacious with plenty of sun beds and beach towels on hand. The staff do get a bit upset if you try to move the sunbeds yourself - they want to move them for you. Service so just enjoy it.

The beach is OK a little cluttered with bits of rubbish but nothing really bad. Due to the strong currents you are not able to swim in the sea but only wade in up to your waist, the lifeguards are there to keep an eye out. The locals sell goods on the beach, they are persistent but will not hassle you if you say no.

The rooms are air conditioned and well appointed with complimentary tea etc. The bathrooms are good and towels changed daily.

There is a range of activity throughout the day, archery, golf, cricket and other events. A list is left in your room each day. I recommend the cocktail demonstration!! The business centre has internet access ( £1.50 for 30 mins) and a huge range of books and DVDs to borrow.

We were only supposed to be at the Taj for a week but ended up staying for two due to the flight disruptions in Europe. The hotel went out of their way to help out during the second week, nothing was too much for them. Impeccable.

The Taj has the reputation of being one of the top hotels in India. We could see why,the reputation is fully deserved. Relax chill out and enjoy it.

A word of warning about the airport. The terminal only has 1 xray scanner, you have to queue outside the building before your cases are screened. It is a very slow process and not easy in 39 c and humidity. Get there early to check in or you might miss your flight, I am not joking!

Taj Exotica is located on the southwest seashore of Goa. It boasts of spectacular vistas of Arabian Sea. Spread over 56 acres of thriving gardens, the resort offers tranquil heaven to experience a peaceful stay in Goa. It has an imposing architecture that blends modern touches with warm hospitality.
The Good Things:-
• Great ambience
• Good food
• Clean Beach
• Tex Kids- the activity centre
• Nice clean big pool for adults and kids
• Bicycles available for hire on the hotel
• Courteous staff
• Lobster shack

The Not so good things:-
• Was billed for items that we did not buy/use- of course later on they reversed it
• Smelly Changing Rooms by the swimming pool

Things that need improvement:-
• More toys /books and activities for kids just like Taj Village

After visiting all the taj properties in Goa , I am of the opinion that the best Taj property in different categories is:
Location- Taj village
Food-Taj Exotica
Beach-Taj Exotica
Staff and courtesy- Taj Agauda
Swimming Pool-Taj Exotica
Activity Centre-Taj Village
Changing Rooms –Taj Village
Bakery- Taj Village
Spa-Tak Exotica
Over all stay experience- Taj Village
