on arrival, we were asked to go to the dining area and were given the rules!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
only take a shower early morning or early evenings - hot water never available
do not tip staff, but to give to owners or manager
no smoking
please read the rules of the hotel before signing register - you will be very surprised - so make sure you have extra insurance cover
not told where nearest medical centres were
breakfast, only toast and fruit juice tea or coffee - had to pay for anything else
coffee, tea, food very expensive all with 8% charge
water - on label is showed 12 rupees, we were charged 30 rupees!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
taxis- all owned by hotel very expensive
bar closes at 11.00 pm and after that told to be quiet
no chance of a lie in - staff hover around waiting for you to leave as they can clean ( if thats what you call it)
Hotel owner only speaks to you when its time to pay your bill every morning
if you need to change your money expect to pay a fee for this faciltiy - not very good rates
The hotel staff were lovely and very pleasant so please tip the staff without the owners or manager knowing
No fridge - so be careful if taking malaria tablets as they need to kept at a constant temperature
Electrics - kept tripping
Nicknamed the hotel - COLDITZ due to a problem with outside taxi drivers trying to get you to use their taxis, we were told not to leave hotel while these drivers where outside the gates of the hotel very scary due to their aggression
get away holiday - yes just to get away from the hotel
Do you like being watched while at the pool or bar or dining room
then this is the place for you

I have to say that my husband and I were really concerned about staying at the Tamerind as it is only classed as a 2 star and our expectations weren't very high. What a fabulous place!
After dropping off all the other tourists in Calangute and Candolin (which are dumps and we would have been horrified if staying there - think India's Blackpool!) we arrived at this oasis called the Tamerind. The welcome was lovely, the hotel very pretty and the staff are wonderful.
Okay, the rooms are huge but are clean and tastefully decorated, nicer than the pictures. You don't need air con as the walls are made of stone so the rooms are cool anyway and the temperature really drops of an evening.
I found the review from the honeymooners very unfair, the hotel is very clean, the pool is cleaned all day and the cleaners are great fun. A place is what you make of it, this is not a place for people who spend all day around a pool and only go out of a night. The pool doen't have the sun all day, hence can be cold. This is a place for people who get up in the morning and go to one of the gorgeous beaches in the area and use the hotel as just somewhere to sleep and relax after a day at the beach.
Bear in mind that the hotel is out of the way and taxis are required all the time so facture this expense in when deciding your spending money. The fares are fixed rate paid via the hotel, a return trip to Anjuna (full of hawkers and drugs)beach is 250 rupees, ashwim beach (lovely) for a return trip is 600 rupees. When going to Ashwim beach the taxi drivers tend to drop you off at Golden Goa bar, don't go there, walk down to the shore and turn left. Round the corner are lovely bars like the Paradise bar with decent toilet facilities and sheltered from the wind.
Baja beach is full of hawkers and a nightmare, however Mandolin, mowjem and Kirum beaches are quiet and beautiful.
Marpas market is great just don't go on a Friday as prices are doubled for the tourists!
As I have said the hotel is great so give it a chance!

The Tamarind is an excellent place to stay if you want peace and quiet. The staff are very friendly and the place is very tranquil. There is no fridge or coffee making facility but so what! If you want the 5 star experience then I think you have to pay a bit more than the very reasonable Tamarind. I ate there for the 3 weeks I was there and unlike some of the other guests who went bargain hunting (which I always found strange because a meal will cost you about £7 for 2 ) I was not ill once. The staff give you the space you need to enjoy each others company, holidays are the only time my husband and I get time together and the staff were courteous but not "all over you" which I really like. I have read the review that gave the tamarind a 2 and I can only think they have never stayed anywhere else in North Goa as as they's know about noise & dogs barking. I loved swimming in the pool of an evening it was lovely and not crowded with everyone sitting around staring at you.The Tamarind is very romantic and meant for couples and friends that are there to enjoy each others company and enjoy Goa. Thank you Tamarind I would not go back to Goa if it was not for you.

just what we needed to get away from our hetic workaholic lives. What a fantastic little gem hidden away in beautiful gardens. As we travelled by coach ( well we nik named it the scooby doo bus! no air conditioning for us only little fans wired to who knows where!) but hey ho we were in India, where cattle roam free on the roads, not too mention drving past the elephant & his Mahoot (owner). Travelling from the airport through Candalim & Calagute and dropping people at there all inclusive holiday camps we thought what on earth have we come too (the costas?) we were immensley relieved on arriving at the Tamarind. Set away from the hustle & bustle but in easy to reach to explore the numerous villages, day time markets & evening fish market and beautiful beaches (especially further north Turtle Beach) also, a must is the Waterfall & elephant sanctury by (cheap) local taxis, a taxi rank is operated via the hotel with very friendly, knowledgeable and safe drivers - (say hello to Rowan & Joe for us) The hotel rooms were large enough (only somewhere to shower & sleep!) no air conditioning, large ceiling fan so the rooms could get quite stifiling, however very clean the linen & towels changed daily, the staff were never intrusive always quietly working in the back ground. Ron the owner & Matthew were friendly and the 4 pet dogs not intrusive.(I was concerned as I am not a big dog lover) The waiting staff were very pleasant & helpful.Yes the pool water was rather invigerating (bloody cold!!) but refreshing at the same time. Definately no frogs, and any leaves from the overhanging trees were cleaned up throughout the day. We had the complementary continental breakfast each morning (toast, juice tea/coffee you could pay for extras like eggs or porriage but we were more than happy to save ourselves for later, for the beach cafe & what fantasic meals to be had, dont be shy - ask, the Goans are very friendly people and quite happy to help you choose. We recommend Janet & Johns at Anjuna beach South and the German Bakery, the Golden Goa at Mandarim beach, and of an evening the Auburgine at Arpora and Sizzelers Restaurant on Anjuna Beach South Road all excellent food & about £20.00 for 4 including drinks!!! Didnt think much of Cocoa Beach this is the river estuary beach & tourist boats coming in & out, so not very pleasant if you wish to swim. Evenings spent at the hotel were friendly & relaxing chatting to other guests (food ok & drinks more expensive so we used to go out & explore the different restaurants in the evening going back to the hotel about 10.00pm the bar closes at 11.00 ish but you can stay chatting on the veranda, we found midnight was late enough for us as we had another busy day ahead exploring. The only down side was we could have done with a fridge in our room for cold drinks, sun cream etc but you could buy drinks from the hotel. also take a high content Deet mossie cream as they were quite ferocious at times. We fell in love with India & its people and made some lovely friends and met like minded people at The Tamarind and have already booked our return to The Tamarind for next year 2008.

We have just returned from a two week, post Christmas break in Goa. This was our first experience of India and travelling from the airport through towns such as Candolim and Calangute with their 'Full English Breakfasts' & 'British Theme Pubs' caused us some anxiety about our choice of destination. We had read the conflicting reviews of the Tamarind before we left the UK so we were not sure what to expect. What we found when we pulled up outside this hotel was in complete contrast to the huge sprawling resorts or concrete monstrosities of the hotels we had passed on the way. The Tamarind is a beautiful stone build building set amongst it's own tropical garden next to the church of St Michael. From the moment we arrived we were treated to the kind of personal service and hospitality rarely experienced in even the more 'Starred' hotels. The staff were all extremely polite and helpful, passing on a wealth of local knowledge and advice as to the best places to visit etc. The Manager is happy to exchange travellers cheques, so there is no need to travel to the local banks. She does ask that you settle your bill on a daily basis. With only 22 rooms (the photographs in the brochures do not do them justice!), the hotel has a quiet and tranquil feel and just the laid back attitude we were looking for. Yes, there is the issue of the hot water, but frankly if you cannot manage to be showered between the hours of 7am & 10am and 4pm & 7pm perhaps you ought to consider one of the larger and immensely less charming hotels. The pool does not get sun on it all day and can be a little chilly, but was well used by all during our stay and contrary to other reviews was clean and free of leaves, insects and FROGS!!?? We did not have an issue with the cleaners, who were very discrete and quiet. Our room was cleaned to a very high standard on a daily basis. I would recommend that you eat out as it is a lot cheaper and the variety in the beach bars and surrounding areas is good. Try the contemporary and stylish 'A Reverie' in Gaudo Waddo for the opportunity to dress up and 'splash out' (we ate with wine for around £25!). On average you can eat in less sumptuous surroundings for about £3 for two!

This hotel is not set smack in the middle of the noisy and very busy towns in the area and it is a 45 minute walk through the small villages and past local bars and guest houses to the lovely beach at Anjuna. The hotel also has resident taxi drivers on hand who are happy to provide suggestions as to where to visit and will accompany you if you wish. Don't believe all you read in the guide books...there are a few hawkers on Anjuna beach but nothing compared to Baga or Calangute!. For total peace and quiet try Mandrim beach.

The wednesday Anjuna flea market is an experience but if you are looking for real bargains try Mapusa market any day of the week for souvenirs and clothes. If you want to travel light it would be easy to pick up an entire wardrobe here very cheaply. Ladies, there is no need to pack high heels! Sandals and flip flops are the order of the day.

For those travelling from the UK it is worth informing your bank if you wish to make use of local ATMs. I was unable to use by cash card after only one use as my bank suspended my card as a precaution against 'cloning'! They did not attempt to contact me and this could have caused some hardship should we have been short on cash!

A word on insects! The local Citronella based repellant is good, but it is worth packing your own bite cream as we found it impossible to buy locally and were offered inappropriate alternatives, some containing some pretty potent ingredients!

In conclusion, the two of us found the Tamarind and Anjuna exactly the holiday we were looking for, and will not hesitate to book again next year or sooner! If you are looking for the Costas in India this is not for you, nor is it if you are looking for night clubs and noisy bars. If you want to experience a little local colour and a more gentle way of life this is the place for you.

its funny peoples perceptions of a place, we stayed at the tamarind the week after the honeymooners left. it was what it said in the brochure, peaceful tranquil, secluded a family run hotel. all the staff were friendly, accomadating, and knowledgable about most things that we enquired about. the pool was bloody cold, but warmed up during the day the complaint i heard more than once was the rooms were to small but if you didnt take the kitchen sink they were more than adequate, cleaned daily with clean sheets every day and towels and tastefully decorated, and yes there were some very strange noises at night, but hell we were in GOA. but hey the food we found was palatable and always served by the helpful smart waitering staff, the lobster which we ordered was superb likewise the goan food. overall the tamarind made our goan holiday the best in every imaginabe way from arriving to departure which came far to soon and my husband and i cant wait to return.

me and my husband went to goa on our honeymoon and fell in love with the place, we decided to go back and wanted a relaxing hotel and found the tmarind hotel on the internet, it looked lovely and sounded very peacefull. When we first arrived we thought wow! it was very green and attractive and when we sat at reception waiting to check in the owner came to talk to us, its a younger man now the son of the original owners and he semed quite keen at this point! We were taken to our room and a little disapointed, althouh we had light outside our room the way the hotel has been designed ment no one had any direct sun at any time of the day! Not good if you fancy sitting out and soaking up the rays! All the rooms do overlook the pool, but no sunlight directly hits the pool so its not a place to soak up the sun and relax for the day, also alot of trees are just over the pool which means there is always leafs and dead insects in the pool! not very nice! as the sunlight hits never hits the pool the water is as cold as ice, during my 2 week stay I never saw a soul in the pool, people tried but just said how cold it was! Our room was very small and okayish although we couldnt use the fan as it had one speed fast and it was like a helicopter taking over not good for warm humid nights! They do do a al acart menu for food which we tried one night, its very expensive compared to other goa places so we thought it would be lovely, the food was terriable warm prawn cocktails food tasted like it was out of a tin! On arrival we were told the hotel rules, mainly what times we could take a shower!! Also there was no fridge or tea making equipment in any of the rooms so if you wanted a cold drink after 11pm when the bar shut forget it!! Normaly on holiday you talk to people around the bar but this bar was empty most nights!! The new owner sulked in the back watching t.v, the old owners tried to talk to us a few times but the effort wasnt realy put in!! The dogs were lovely but barked and howled all night long so your talking 4 hours sleep max, i brought some sleeping tablets from the local chemist in the end! Not what I expected from a relaxing holiday!! The maids sat outside our room from 8am so we were woken up by them talking most mornings, the rooms were just about cleaned and my husband smashed a glass on out 4th day there, glass was still there when we left! On the website it asks you to tell them if your celebrating a birthday and they will arrange a bottle of wine for you in your room, it was my husbands birthday and yes on arrival the wine was there only with no fridge it was warm, but the biggest shock came the nextday when we got the bill we had been charged for it and very expensive by goa standards!! There is a bus to the beach but it leaves at 9.45 on the dot and then you have to be ready to leave the beach at 1pm!! The tamarind to me and to many others who we talked to just appears to be a big money making shceme form them adding 8% to everything you order (and still expexting tippiing at the end) to the prices of everything!! Oh and dont expect to play the mini golf as thats coverd in leaves and no one played it during the 2 weeks it was there more of a running joke that it was only there to push the stars up on the hotel!! Oh and the pool table was okay but you cant play it after 10pm at night!! It wasnt a place i would go back to and i wouldnt realy recomend it for a relaxing holiday, unless you want 3-4 hours sleep told when to have showers and like making sure your out of your room by 12pm for the maids to clean it, so no long lie ins then!! oh and dont order the food!!!! but goa its self is lovely abit more commecial this time so head north for unspolit beaches etc, not the ones the hotel takes you to!! have a good stay but dont order the food, expect to play golf/pool or sleep!!!
