I stayed here just a week ago, before arrival i was bit nervous as to where i was staying, upon arrival i was over the moon, i was greeted with a warm welcome and showed to my room, i had a large double bed to myself, fridge, private bathroom/shower room, tv, balcony, large ceiling fan, i was very impressed with the standard of the room, Firstly i met tina the lady who runs the internet cafe below, she was super friendly and really helpful and within ten minutes she had organised me a bike, i later met vanita and jollwyn who run the hotel and the same applied, lovely friendly warm welcoming people and keen to help with any problem, jollwyn and tina also run a money exchange place called mama janets which was also very helpful, the hotel is lovely situated central anjuna down a road and a one minute walk from orchard stores, i cant say enough about this place i thoroughly enjoyed my stay and will definatly be going back, the warmness and friendliness of tina, jollwyn and vanita made it just that bit more special, as a lone traveller they made me welcome and i always felt there was someone around for me if needed. all in all 10 out of 10 for price and every other aspect. We stayed at The Orange House in December 2007 for five nights. The trip to Goa (from Cochin) wound up taking us almost a day, as we had not factored a pilgrimage that was taking place into our travel plans, and thus were shuttled about from train to bus to taxi to bus to taxi - until we reached Anjuna.

LOCATION: The Orange House is about a 30-minute taxi ride from the main bus station in Anjuna. It is a 20-minute walk from the beach, and in a fairly quiet part of the town. As there were four of us we felt safe going there and walking to and from the hotel, but if I travelled alone/with only one other girlfriend I probably would find somewhere more central, as it is a bit too quiet/isolated.

PRICE: We booked two twin rooms online via their website (there were four of us girls travelling). The rooms cost us the equivalent of $6 each/night (price per person). So as it was, we weren't expecting the Taj - but we got a lot more than we anticipated.

ROOMS: Each room had two twin beds, television, mini fridge, bathroom with western-style toilets and 24hr hot water - and a small but useful balcony overlooking a leafy courtyard/someone's backyard. We used the railing to dry our towels/washing, and we could easily fit a few people out there to have a drink. The beds were a tiny bit saggy, but comfortable overall. We were able to hang our mosquito nets from a nail above the beds too. The bathroom was tiny, so we had to cover the toilet when having a shower so that it didn't get wet - but the toilet always worked and the water was always hot, so no complaints. Goa is very hot, and although the room was not air-conditioned, the ceiling fans worked just fine.

AMENITIES: There is a net "cafe" downstairs that had a few computers. Internet was fine, not super fast but not slow either. I think the cost was very minor (perhaps worked out to a couple of dollars for an hour). No breakfast, but there is a mini-mart just a few minutes walk away, and then of course other cafes/restaurants as you get closer to Anjuna Beach. (We also tried an Italian restaurant a couple of times that had recently opened just 5-minutes walk away, and although pricey (for Goa) it was nice to have decent food close by.) The other great thing about The Orange House is that they hire out scooters - great for getting around on, especially considering the long walk to Anjuna Beach. The cost includes a can of gas, and works out to something small like $10/day. It's cheaper than taking taxis and definitely more fun!

SERVICE: The hotel is owned by two couples, who live in the building. Jordan, one of the owners, was incredibly helpful during our stay. We never actually met him, but he helped us over the phone with directions (even shouting over the phone at the obnoxious taxi driver who tried to overcharge us) and arranged for a driver for us for our first night (one of his cousins, although beware ladies - he is very persistent!) His wife, one of the other owners, was also great. She was always downstairs at the net cafe and even gave us lessons on the scooters (though I am sure she must have been laughing on the inside at our terrible driving!) They were also helpful in suggesting places of interest around Goa.

The Orange House is fantastic value for money. Rooms are cheap and yet you still get proper toilets and hot water, so it's hard to imagine a hotel with greater value. The only downside is the location - good if you are fit enough to walk half an hour to get anywhere decent and want somewhere quiet, but not-so-good if you are wanting the touristy Goan experience (busy, and by the beach). I would recommend this to other students travelling on a budget, or couples who do not mind the "no frills" rooms. In terms of rooms I suppose it is "average", but I am rating this "very good" because for $12/room, it is absolutely fantastic.
