This park has great trails and mountain views right in Alabama! It is also known for the limestone caves.

The playground part isn't bad, but it is small. The park itself however is beautiful, with great hiking

Our family made an afternoon outing by hiking up to the park from the lower old road.

This park is very rustic, good for family hikes, including family dogs. There are many trails, including for biking. Reaching the top of the mountain can take half an hour at a comfortable pace for all. Once on top, the grade levels off.

Until recently, the park was free to all. There used to be a lively restaurant, dependable store with refreshment, and inexpensive accommodations in the cabins. But now this is primarily a day use park, with nice accommodations for longer stays for RVs. There are public restrooms (to be reconstructed,) a country store (closed for reconstruction,) pavilion (for fee,) trails, parking lots (with entrance fee,) other sights to see, including a private astronomical observatory (fees apply; hours vary.)
The park is free unless you drive in. The entrance fee is $3 per person (weekends.)

We recommend a day visit, as use of the park is rather pricey: Cabins $87+, Lodge rental $1600 for 8 hours, Rustic (very) Camping for 2 persons ($13+taxes&fees per night.)

This park, run by the state of Alabama, is currently is in a state of disrepair (they are rebuilding the office, store, & public restrooms) and has lots of rules if you interact with the staff or wish to do more than a daylight hike.

Stay off the main roads, take the trails by foot, bring the kids and the dogs, and have a great time out in nature.

I haven't stayed in one of the cabins but I understand they are rustic but well maintained. We had some friends from FL stay in them last year and they loved the cabins. My older grandchildren love the bike trails. My younger grandchildren enjoy biking around the camp ground and stopping at the country store for refreshments. After 50 years, we still have family reunions in one of the pavillions in the picnic grounds area. There is an entrance fee but I think it is well worth the money to preserse this special and historical place. The view coming down the mountain especially at night is awesome and there are a few pull off overlooks.
