We have enjoyed Mr. Chen's since it opened several years ago.

Advice: Don't get the standard sesame chicken / Mongolian beef served at every mall Chinese restaurant. Instead, try something different, such as the basil chicken, the mapo tofu (which is not vegetarian - it has ground pork - and which is served in a flaming fondue-style pot, so your food never gets cold), and especially the boiled beef in hot oil. This last dish, despite its odd name, is both simple and delicious. Each of these dishes is a departure from cookie-cutter Chinese fare without rising to the "dare food" level of crispy intestine, spicy sliced pork ears, and beef tripe - although these dishes are also available, if you are more adventurous than we are.

I also recommend the house chow fun, a wide noodle dish with beef, chicken and shrimp. It may be available even if it isn't on the menu or specials board. Ask your waiter!

Regarding the atmosphere, the decor is better than most take-out Chinese places. We also enjoy seeing Chinese news on TV, although we understand not a whit.

Without question, Mr. Chen's is our favorite Chinese restaurant in Birmingham.

My husband and I very much enjoy the Mongolian beef and Sizzling Rice Soup at Mr. Chen's. It's our Chinese restaurant of choice now. We also like the fact that it's very convenient to us.

We went to Mr. Chen's based on the Trip Advisor reviews. We had high expectations, and we were leery when we rolled up to a strip mall store front restaurant with neon beer signs in the window. We were seated promptly and pleasantly. Our server was very sweet, but spoke(and understood)very little English. Our food came in a reasonable amount of time. It was served at an appropriate temperature, but the taste was average, at best.

We did notice that they were doing a brisk carry out business.

Great traditional Chinese dishes...freshly prepared with quality ingredients and very reasonably priced. Unusual authentic dishes as well make this a great spot for lunch or dinner.

I'll admit that we haven't branched out to the really authentic stuff like crispy intestines, but we're so happy to find a Chinese restaurant that serves chow-fun noodles like we would get in L.A. And dishes like kung pao aren't loaded with celery as a filler. (There's NO celery in the kung pao.)

You know you're in an authentic place when it's full of people of the same nationality: the Chinese folks who frequent the place get all kinds of exotic-looking dishes. Some day I'm going to get up the courage to try one of them...but probably not the crispy intestines.
