It's a tourist icon, but not overly touristy. The food is delicious, and portions large. Recommend the fried pickles and the fish tacos (2 huge tacos that easily could be split between two people.)
The atmosphere is great. We went for a late lunch and it wasn't crowded at all.

The Hangout is probably the most popular "hangout" in Gulf Shores. It is a bar/restaurant/live band dive with a gift shop as well. The food is good, and they have really good bands outdoors in the sand with neat benches on which one may sit. HOWEVER, when I am at a bar listening to a band with friends, I do not like a bunch of little kids running around and dancing. The band even has to censor its songs. The kids may stay until 11, which is ridiculous. They should go home at nine!!! Another band comes at eleven, and it stays until two, so that is not too bad. Other than the kid element, I like the hangout. It is a lot of fun. Buying a shirt or hat is a must if you have a teenager.

We had a great time at The Hangout. We had to wait about 1 hour to eat but there are so many thing to do for all ages the wait seem very little. I had a 10 year old and 8 year old which enjoyed the games and loved the music. Once we were seated for dinner our surrounding were wonderful, you enjoyed the music, the breeze and the sound from the ocean. The food was served in large portion sizes which I felt could be halfed with someone even the kids meals were large. The appitizers are huge! We ordered fried pickles which was so yummy. The over all experience was great and we will be back soon.

Great atmosphere...fun for the young and old. The wait staff is entertaining and gets the customers involved with dancing and singing. Very interactive. The live bands are entertaining and there is a children's area with a big sand area and foaming bubbles for lots of fun.

We didn't eat here, but purchased t-shirts and a very cool hangout it looks like. At night you can tell they have fun. Everyone was really nice here, but they have things going on all day here it looks like..... bubble parties for kids, volleyball on beach, bars open outside in the area of the Hangout they own, little trampoline jumping things (purchase) your kids can jump on, treasure hunts, a small playground, and the restaurant smelled good.
