“Nice ride across the bay”

Taking the ferry across Mobile Bay from Fort Morgan to Dauphin Island provides a good start for a tour of the area south of Mobile. The ride takes about 30 minutes and while on the water you get a good view of several gas rigs in the bay. Our only problem with the ferry involved trying to find out if it was running. We drove the 20 miles to the dock one morning hoping to catch the 8:45 a.m. ferry and it did not come. We found out later that it did not start running until 11:00 a.m. That day. The next day I took the precaution of phoning the advertised number before heading out but only got a busy signal. The website only posted basic info about the ferry. We took a chance and did enjoy the ride but would recommend that the company do a better job of keeping customers informed about changes in the schedule.

The waters were calm and the ride was fine. You can get out of your car if you choose. The sea gulls were friendly and glided along with the ferry as we crossed the bay. Nothing fancy, but served the purpose, and it sure beats driving all the way around the bay! You simply get in "line" and wait in your car until the ferry loads (or get out and visit with fellow travelers), after the ferry is loaded, the attendant will come around and collect your fare.

If you've ever been curious about how ferrys work or just curious about riding a larger vessel, this is definitely the way to go. For just a few bucks per person (and free for children under 12), you can walk on and ride roundtrip across the gulf.

We always take our visitors on the ferry trip from Dauphin Island to Baldwin County. Very refreshing and you get to see two forts.

This car and walk-on passenger ferry runs between Dauphin Island and Orange Beach, Alabama. For a relative low price...$16, one-way, for a car, pickup truck or van, and one driver...$4.50 for each additional adult, and kids under 12 are free.......you can bypass the traffic and the tunnel of Mobile. The attendant at the Orange Beach side, told me one could save hours, particularly if traffic is heavy in Mobile, or there is an accident in the tunnel (which apparently happens frequently). The ferry is small and looks like it has crossed the bay for many years, but is well maintained and safe. The trip takes about 1/2 hour, and if the bay is calm is very enjoyable. The ferry ride across the bay is beautiful, and is a welcome departure from the monotony of the interstate.
