Paço Alfândega used to be part of Recife port complex, and it was built in 1732. For almost a hundred years it was a convent and later became the customs office in the port. Restoration made it a rather comfortable place to shelter from the hot weather in Recife, bathrooms are clean and free, and they have some fast food restaurants and local shops. Not the best restaurants in town, but the food you'll find in Brazilian shopping malls.

This is an ancient building very well maintained and renewed; originally was a convent, then the city custom offices and wharehouse.
The Catholic Church is the landlord, which leases to a unfortunate mall enterprise... word say that is bullied by a powerful economic/politic family and does not get licences for boosting potential.
Apart from that, it is worth a visit for the indoor arquitecture, the outdoor views and neibourough and the surprising and amazing floors.
Those are modern, the work of a recently passed away local artist (google Adriano Suassuna) see the pictures and judge.
A couple of art and holy art stores are worth visiting if you want a good quality souvenir, the rest is cr**. The nearby bookstore has a bar if you want a snack.
Go and enjoy (quickly) on your way from/to the next door "Recife Antigo" neighbourood.

It's a little mall, with just a few stores and a reasonable food court - many workers from the offices around have lunch in here.
Well located at the "Recife Antigo" (the old town), it has an intriguing architecture mixing modern lines to the old building that once standed here - the former Recife customs.
Add as decoration some drawings and quotes by Ariano Suassuna (famous Brazilian author who lived in Recife) and you have the whole picture.
Worth a visit if you are nearby.

I was in this shopping and I think it's very beautiful like architecture and the area around , just in front of the river.
The coffe shop on the ground flour is really good, for the happy hour they have someone playing the piano, very good.
