I have to take a somewhat contrary view from that of the previous reviewer (entry dated Aug. 2, 2005, from Atlanta). Yes, the International Palace is in bad need of a renovation, with our room (at least) appearing to date from the late 70's to early 80's. However, everything worked perfectly, and although place was not modern or terribly chic, it met our needs very adequately. As it happens, I was accompanying my wife on her business trip, so she had business needs while I had leisure interests. Both of us have been completely satisfied here. I speak Portuguese well enough that I can communicate with hotel staff in general, and those here (I write this from the hotel during our stay) have been excellent. When we couldn't figure out how to connect to the internet (the rooms have cable connections at no charge), the hotel's IT guy was at our door in 10 minutes. It turns out the problem was with our equipment, and he lent us what we needed (again, no charge) to get us online.
The front desk staff have answered all our questions, and the whole staff have been polite, accommodating and friendly.
As for the breakfast, we have travelled extensively in Brasil and find that this hotel's offering has been among the best we've had. In addition to the standard ham, cheese, breads, yogurt, fruit, cereal, cakes and coffee, the International Palace offers eggs, cooked meats, and a station where foods typical of the Northeast are prepared in front of you. All together, excellent fare, and the hotel employs an outstanding baker. I could live on their cornmeal cake.
As mentioned above, the hotel does need a multi-million dollar face lift, beginning with the elevators and continuing into the guest rooms. It's not that the facilities are inadequate or in bad repair, rather they just need updating and freshening. The hotel's prime location (no more than 100 feet to the beautiful Boa Viagem beach) makes it a natural draw for tourists. A substantial investment would make this a truly outstanding hotel, but the friendly staff, excellent breakfast, terrific location and value tariff (we're paying R$130 in the off season) make this worthy of consideration.
