“lots of room for improvement!”
Reviewed December 11, 2013

I've spent two nights here and choose one of the low price rooms that can be described as sufficient, but just for sleeping if you are not that picky about room and bed size because they are quite small. I was happy about the air conditioning that was working fine and that there were no mosquitoes or other insects still the room was to far away from the rooter therefore no wifi, had to go out to use the internet.
Location is perfect close to Quatro Cantos where all the night life of Olinda happens...
The common spaces are nice and the interior garden with pool is indeed a nice place to relax.
The staff is friendly but still could improve their customer relation skills. Just one of them speaks English that is a minus point.
I left at last in my review the common showers and toilets that really disappointed me even if I am not that a demanding person. Disgusting I believe is the best description for this smelly and dirty space that is really a pest hole. Without any intention to discredit the good parts of this Posada I have to warn everybody about this negative parts of this place.
Overall ok, lots of room for improvement!
Personally for a longer stay in Olinda I would chose another place!

This colonial pousada has shared areas very nice and colorful, and a big garden for relax. When we entered we liked it very much; but when we went to sleep we realized that our room was really filthy: we found hair in the bed and the sheets were steined, It was really disgusting!
I think that health is a priority for every guests and is useless to have a beautiful lobby and a beautiful garden if the places where people sleep are dirty.

We had a wonderful stay here for two nights in the apartment located on the highest level. magnificient view on the town of Olinda. Rooms and balcony are clean, decorated with fun colors. The breakfast is the best; you can choose of so many different things; you really have to try it all.
The pousada is located in a good area near the center and near a nice view where you can eat or have a drink.

Room Tip: the highest rooms have the best view overlooking the town.

Stayed here in Feb for a week for carnival. Great place with really friendly staff. Initial room was great with ensuite, then we moved to a much smaller double with a shared bathroom for the carnival due to availability. Both rooms had air con, but the latter was a tiny room. We booked late so you had to take what you could get.
The posada was perfectly located for the carnival- right in the hub of it & any thing goes in that part of town. It was quite noisy at times, but hey, that's carnival. What was really nice was that you could chill in the pool if you wanted to get away from the carnival for 5 mins. Would definitely recommend.

We only stayed here very briefly for one night but we were impressed by the rooms and the set up. Bed was comfortable and room clean. We had one at the back overlooking the gardens and pool area which is a real bonus if you want some relaxation time here.

The staff were helpful but didn't speak any English. They got us a 4am transfer to airport for 60R$ which was very reasonable. Hotel is located on a nice street but as with most places in Brazil after 10/11pm you need to get a taxi back to be safe.

If you have any sort of mobility issues make sure you request a ground floor room, the staircases are tiny and circular to although they brought our bags us for us getting down was hard work!

Also when booking on line through an outlet be careful - despite booking a double room AND selecting 2 people before we bought (which had no impact on the price) we received a confirmation for 1 person so were charged more on arrival than we had signed up to - this happened a couple of times in Brazil and seems to be a website error.

This pousada is run by a team of vivacious women who create a mood of relaxed hedonism at Carnival time. (See the owner, Patricia Lira, pictured in front of a portrait of herself.) The power of their human sunshine let’s you forgive the minor imperfections. It is very friendly – straight, gay, undecided, young and old friendly. The staff don’t speak English or Spanish, there is no soap in the rooms, the airport transfer driver they booked came without a sign and it took two hours for him to find me – but all of this is forgiven - outweighed by the warmth of the staff and the ambience and the friendliness of the other guests. During my stay these ranged from the head of an English language school in Salvador (Brazil) who preferred the Olinda carnival to her own, a French woman taking a months break to travel after completing a major project, an English couple who were taking a mid life year break to travel the world and a retired and ageing retired television executive whose main interest was music and photography. There was also a gay contingent which included a Brazilian Little Richard camp-alike. We all meet over the communal tables at a generous buffet breakfast with a wide range of fruits, breakfast savouries, pastries and pies.
The pool is clean and warm. The air condition in my room was perfect. The place is full of colour and vibrant artworks. At Carnival time the front of the hotel, protected with barriers and its own guard, becomes a party area for guests a few of who of whom seem never to leave the premises. This place is ideal for people of a liberal disposition who can accept that the rough is outweighed by the smooth. I had so much fun I may be back. The Olinda street carnival is the last of its kind and unlike the others, VIP-free and open to all.

First when I stayed at Alto Astral it was just by coincidence walking the street and since then I have been there several times. It is absolutely a place worthy of recommending. For those who want to sense the atmosphere of old Olinda it is the perfect. It is a pleasant relieve from the typical hotel room settings to stay in a small city filled with history, art and colours which are well represented in the hotel. At the breakfast table you meet both native and international visitors. The reception is providing very good service in answering questions and meeting concerns. Very, very personal and lovely.
