Visited for lunch with friends. Nice ambiance and decently quick service, given that it was a Sunday afternoon and they filled up soon after we arrived. I tried the Vegetable Cannelloni, or rather the Mughlai version of it. It wasn't really Itallian but did taste very good. The others in the party ordered Risotto and Biryani which were nice as well. The prices were quite reasonable too. Recommended!

Mocambo is one of the older restaurants with good reputation. Nice and cozy seating arrangements. It is quite popular, so you may have to stand in queue in peak time. Their continental dishes are quite good. Try their sizzler! They also serve Indian Mughlai dishes.
It used to be place where Calcutta's upper crust used to frequent. It is still a pleasant place tp spend your evenings at.

Mocambo serves italian, continental and indian food. Although we for some reason, always ended up ordering from the continental variety. The sizzlers are awesome and the starters are great too. They have a lot of things in their menu and the menu-book is pretty much detailed. Take your time and read it before ordering, or simply ask for help if you want a short-cut, the waiting staff/attendents won't disappoint you, atleast not in our case. The ambiance is nice and warm. Per person the food might cost around Rs.500, depends on what all you order :-).

Started in 1956, this was the place where it all started … European décor & food, singing and dancing and of course a place for ‘who’s who’ of Kolkata to be seen in.

So Mocambo it was … since we could not enter Peter Cat because of a hour+ waiting on a week night!! I miss their Chelo Kabas, but that’s another story. I have had steaks before here and the price still surprises me – especially coming from Mumbai. We went in to a full house after a more decent 20 mins wait outside … a mix crowd of mostly locals, office goers and of course the western tourists. An over the edge décor and uninterested staff, you wait to be attended which can take a lot of time. The food & drinks is VFM and it’s shocking to see a pint of KF Ultra beer at Rs. 125.

We ordered chilly baby-corns and Devilled Crab, the latter supposedly an all-time hit here. The corns were pretty tasteless, the crab good – boneless, cooked in a white sauce and served over the shell, baked with cheese. Since I had the steak before, decided to go with the manager’s recommendation - chicken chipolata (sizzler) and it was just okay. Would love to try the Betky dishes here next time …

The names of the dishes are still the same as 50 years ago, unmatched across India I am pretty sure … Angels on a Horseback, Hawks Bay Prawn Cocktail, Fish a la Diana, Chicken a la Kiev & Pavlograd (I am sure this was done to keep CPM leaders happy), Pillau etc. The presentation can be significantly improved, so is the taste, but I did not see too many people complaining.

Will end with a few words from the 2nd generation owner Mr. Kothari (he owns Peter Cat as well): “A German architect designed the interiors and my dad got an Italian chef flown down to design the menu. Kitty Bryanan, a British fashion designer, made the dresses that Pam Crain used to wear at Mocambo—they were mermaid-like, flared at the bottom—while the dance floor was of reinforced glass imported from Belgium, with coloured psychedelic lights below. Only the crème de la crème would dine there, and dinner jackets were mandatory.”

The risotto and sizzler was wonderful.
Have a go.

But the downpoint is there is very little to choose in Vegetarian Menu.
