“An excellent weekend retreat”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 21, 2012

Itachuna rajbari!!!!! Only 90 kms from kolkata lies a huge mansion...it belonged to the KUNDANS(a type of bargi in ancient west bengal) and now their surname has changed to KUNDU. There are more than 100 rooms but only 15 approx are rented our to tourists. A huge courtyard resembles a small football ground alonwith gas lights(now bulbs has been put there). Its a different experience. Staying in a huge mansion like that inside a village is by itself a experience. But it can enjoyed if you are in a group.Take the rooms in the 1st floor. Ground floor rooms are basic. Room rent is a bit high considering the location but still I do not have any complaints. Expect basic facilities like geyser, toiletries in bathroom, towels etc. A/C is optional and at a huge cost. We visited in Dec and therefore didn't need it. Food is typical bengali one. Cooking quality is good. People are well behaved. They are from local villages. Do not expect english speaking waiters.Overall i do recommend this place for a different type of experience.See the pics

Room Tip: take 1st floor rooms. I stayed in Thakuma'r room.

Itachuna Rajbari has recently been turned into a heritage home stay experience. It's a beautiful heritage mansion of the Kundu family, in the classic courtyard style of Bengal. The ideal way to visit the palace is to bring a large group of family and friends along, which is what we did. The rooms are aptly named 'Baroboudi'r ghar', 'Chotoboudi'r ghar', 'Dada'r ghar', 'Chhorda'r ghar', 'Didi'r ghar', 'Thakuma'r ghar', 'Gurudeber ghar', etc. The pricing is very reasonable, and the food is excellent. Booking the entire house is perfectly affordable, and also pleasant. Nearby, the Ganga in Chandannagar is lovely. Boat rides between Hoogly Imambara and Bandel Church are easy excursions. But mostly, in autumn, the green paddy fields of Bengal are the most beautiful attractions. Just two hours drive from Kolkata, and an hour and fifteen minutes by train. highly recommend the experience, especially if you've never experienced being inside a classic Bangal mansion.

The restoration isn't complete, and over time, I expect, the experience to improve further. The price will probably also go up.

Room Tip: Baroboudi'r ghar and Didi'r ghar are especially nice. If you have a large group to fit into...
