Reviewed January 18, 2013

If you are interested to learn about the life and family of the Nobel Prize winner poet of India Rabindranath Tagore, then you must visit Jorasanko Thakoor Bari in Kolkata.

Many of the personal belongings of Rabindranath are displayed besides excellent paintings by his brother Abanindranath.

We could not bring back any images as photography within the museum and art gallery is not permitted though we were able to pictures of the building from outside.

History of Bengal is incomplete without Tagore and that is why the birthplace of Tagore is a heritage site in West Bengal. At present the house forms a part of the Vishwabharati University.

Best time to visit is 25th day of Baisakh, the first month of Indian calendar and birthday of Rabindranath.

If you are aware of the rich tradition the Thakur family had, you'll love it. One has to not to learn but taste the culture.

This is one place worth visiting to see and learn about the life of Rabindranath Tagore at his family home in Kolkata. There are many of his personal effects on display and three different galleries display paintings of the era by him and his illustrious brother Abanindranath Tagore besides some other painters too. Photography is not permitted inside the museum and art galleries but you can take pictures of the building from the outside.

If Tagore is synonymous with Kolkata, then Jorasanko is synonymous with both. There is a museum here which can acclimatise the visitor with glimpses of Tagore's versatility.
