“Lungs of Kolkata”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 19, 2014

Maidan means open field. Calcutta is endowed with a huge track of field with greenery that strech from the eastern bank of river Hoghly (Ganges) to Jawahar Lal Nehru Road in the West and Raj Bhawan in the north to Victoria Memorial in the South. Important landmarks like Fort William, Eden Garden, Fountain of joy, St Paul's Cathedral, Birla Planetarium, Academy of Fine Arts, Rabindra Sadan, Nandan several football grounds and club tents, ladies golf course, horse race course, Shahid Minar, Red Road, Mayo Road, Lovers Lane, Brigade Parade ground are associated with maidan. Maidan provides the the freshness and greenery and is a historical and cultural center of Kolkata. It is also a center of leisure and entertainment for Calcuttans. Maidan is alive with people from the dawn to the dusk.Life on the Maidan is the quintessence of life in Kolkata.

“Seedy and Neglected”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 27, 2014

While any green space in this chaotic city is to be cherished, I wouldn't rate this as any sort of tourist attraction. Yes, there are a few worthwhile sights in its vicinity, it is a rather sadly neglected place. There is a huge dead tree which no one has bothered to clear away. It has now been converted into a sort of impromptu grandstand by local sports spectators, which says a lot about the poor facilities on offer here. The grass is often worn through, giving the place an overused and under-maintained look.

Like so many other things about Kolkata, it has an air of neglect and decrepitude. It makes one wish that Indian governments would do less crowing about their new BRICs status and fill some potholes in and do some maintenance instead.

“Crowded but unavoidable”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 25, 2014

This used to be a great big green patch in the heart of the city - now it is dusty and brown and as the city has got crowded there are more and more people. A tourist cannot really avoid the place as the Victoria Memorial and St Paul's are at one end and Chowringhee st runs alongside. I would be careful of petty theft etc in this area.

“Nice for a walk away from the frenzied streets”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 24, 2014

The Maidan is large and is a pleasant retreat from the bustle of nearby shopping streets. There are a number of statues, some gardens, large fields where soccer games are going on.

“Open area in the middle of the city”

I think Kolkata is the only city in India for the public. Its completely enjoyable for a poor man. And Maidan is really the heart of the city .
