Jai MAA KALI, This is out of 52 sati pith according to puranas. The legend is like :: Maa Sati, the wife of Shiva & daughter of Daksha Prajaapati (a descendant of Bhrama).Maa Sati married Shiva against her father wishes. Then Daksha had arranged a mahajanga to insult Almighty Shiva by inviting all GOD & Godesses except Alimghty Shiva & Maa Sati.Against Shiva's wishes, Maa Sati went to her father place but unfortunately was insulted by her father. Unable to bear this insult, Sati immolated herself on the Homa.

Enraged at the insult and the injury, Shiva through Veerabhadra, destroyed Daksha's Yagna & cut off Daksha's head and replaced it with a goat's head, but do not kill Him. After that , Almighty Shiva picked up Maa Sati's body, and performed the dance of destruction throughout the Universe. All other gods intervened to stop this dance but failed, after that the disk of Vishnu cut through the corpse of Sati, whose various parts of the body fell at several spots all through the undivided India and formed 52 Shakti Peethas today.

It is said that in Kalighat toes of the right foot of maa Sati fell.
Nakuleshwar Shiva is also there as Kal Bhairav.
The temple is near jatin das park/kalighat metro station.Temple opens from 5.00 A.M. to 2.00 P.M and 5.00 P.M to 10.30 PM.Please note tuesday & saturdays including amabashya is auspicious day for Kali bhakta.
There is a free general queue as well a Sevaits/V.I.P/Staff queue.
There are two queues-one is towards Garbha Graha (Nijo -Mandir) and another for normal Dharshan from the Varandah (Jor- bangla).

Precautious note do not mingle & take advise from panda/Touts, chances are high that you be fool.
Have great dharshan & get blessing from Maa KALI. Jai Maa Kail.

Maa Kali is prominetly viewed and worshiped here since long years.Visit to this divine place will chage your mind and thoughts.Your prayer to HER will give you a peace of mind and perhaps you will get hapiness after you visit this holy place. Make sure you don't carry much cash, ornaments as during rush due to crowds it is not advisable. Plenty of strret beegars so don't think much about them. And chose only qualified Pandas to guide you to the holy cage. A must and once in life time visit is recomendbale if you believe in GOD.

Yes. I am not a religious person. But my family is. I have been to Dakhsineswar and just loved that place. But in Kalighat, the priests (read touts) will try to fool you by hook or by crook to extract some money from you. The long queue will test your patience and then some tout will ask you for money for a backdoor entry. You could see some people is availing that access. When you are closer people behind you will come over you and will try to dodge you anyway.

If you don't have strong faith in Kali maa then try to avoid this place.

A big elaborate building, densely surrounded by bazaar. (to the point that you can't take pix of the whole thing). Crowded and lively. Chaotic layout. All kinds of rituals to do, . Brash priests. "Freelance priests" (maybe some are pure conmen) and 'guides', ready to make money from you, whether you are a pious foreign Hindu or a just a curious Western tourist.

(No shoes, so remember where you leave it. Strictly no camera)

Quite dirty inside.(I supose it is too difficult to keep such a place really clean). Seems they slaughter 15 goats daily (we can the sacrificial altar) and give food to thousands every lunch time, Someone may ask you to 'contribute', maybe a bag of rice for Rs6000. You may want to give, but ensure you are giving to the right person. Otherwise, just smile and move on.

In the midst of the fuss, don't forget to reach the main shrine and see the dark face of Kali Maa. Take it as a special spiritual journey, or a challenge to negotiate. Either way...it won't be boring.

The Kali temple, Kolkata holds a special significance in the Hindu religion. I am a believer and have visited it twice. If you take the effort to wake up early and reach the temple by 815 am, you will have a 30 minute wait (on a regular day). Having read about it a lot, I was looking forward to the Darshan. However, the brashness of the priests and their greed, was a spoiler for me. Wonder how they have'nt received grace despite spending all their working-life in and around the temple. The 'Dakshineshwar' and 'Belur Math' scores over this point, in comparison. In case you are not a believer, and claustrophobic, can avoid.
