One reviewer said that you can find any kind of book in this market but, as a foreigner and traveler, I had a difficult time with a few things.

First, I had trouble finding shops to buy my two books, which were English novels. Second, I had trouble finding a decent selection of both second hand and new English novels. New mainstream novels such as Dan Brown, Agatha Christie, as well as Classics were generally available, but still hard to find. Third, almost none of the shopowners spoke English.

College Street is an enormous marketplace filled with book shops, a spectacle in itself. However, all the book shops are small businesses, operating out of essentially large cupboards, and they sell mostly books for educational purposes.

I wouldn't suggest looking here for leisure reading. But I would still suggest a visit if you have some spare time.

Students across the city and suburbs flock here to bargain and buy books of all genre.
after one is done with the tiring book-buying spree, Coffee House is a popular to have a refreshing supper and adda !
But it's lost it's shine ( and obviously business ), thanks to the boom of e-commerce portals.

Its always said that - 'didn't find the book anywhere, go to college street then'. Closely entwined with the life of book loving bengalis, College Street is the place to throng. For a visitor to Kolkata, the trip is not complete without a visit to college stree. Surrounded by Institutions that pioneered western education in the country way before the sepoy mutiny, one is bound to feel nostalgic. Calcutta University, Hare School, Presidency College, Hindu School and what not. Walking down the college street which brought about a revolution in the educational atmosphere of India, one is bound to get drenched in history. Thronged by stalwarts like Raja Ram Mohan Roy, Ramtanu Lahiri, Sir David Hare, D W Bethune, HLV Derozio, College street has history in each and every brick on its buildings.

A must visit for all travellers.

The entire area is filled with various educational institutes and yes of course lots of book stalls.
This place gives you the feel of a city which have a very glorious history.

Went there alone from new town by taxi (around 250 bucks...cheap huh!!) and walked around the place for around 3 hours but didn't feel tired at all. The books shops mainly for students but the amount of other books besides educational purpose can't be neglected either.

Had a great time..... good for book lovers and for those who like to roam around places just to feel the vibe(You know what I mean)

Entire area is full of book shops. You can get both new & old books as well. In reality the old book shops are really the places for treasure hunting - you will be pleasantly surprised to get books that you have dreamt of sometimes. Need to bargain very strongly for the purchase of old books. Normally in new books the shops offer 10% discount.
