Centre of Kolkata and you are in a tranquil ambiance inside. Good for business or marketing trip. Good food at "Aheli". Very spacious lobby, corridors and rooms.

I really enjoyed my stay at the Peerless. All was good. I stayed in Park Hotel for 3 days before moving to Peerless for my last 2 nights in Kolkata. If I had known about Peerless, i would have spent all my 5 nights here. Its cheaper than Park Hotel but very much better.
Its as good as a 5 star in terms of all of what it has to offer, only it is not as Big and may not have all the facilities found in a 5 star. But overall i would recommend everyone, if you can afford Peerless, dont think twice, this is the one to stay in. If you are choosing between Park Hotel and Peerless, I fully recommend you Peerless. You will NOT be dissapointed.

Let me start with the defence. The really 5* hotels in Cal (Oberoi, Hyatt etc) will cost you a lot more to be transported into the cosmopolitan and cosseted 21st century. The scale then drops off very quickly towards backpacker territory. The Peerless occupies a sparsely occupied middle ground, and while it's over-priced on an absolute basis, is a realistic value-for-money choice if you don't want to spend big bucks, but do want to be in a real hotel.

The location's good, on the main drag, walkable to the maidan, the Indian museum, the Oberoi, the Victoria Memorial, and Park St (the latter two on the cusp of walkable depending on your fitness and the temperature). It's by a metro entrance, too.

The room was adequate but clean; firm beds with a thin duvet (but my son and I slept perfectly well), an old CRT television with iffy reception, a kettle, and a good sized bathroom with long bath and basic toiletries. I wasn't travelling with a laptop for a change so I don't know if the room had wireless internet or not. The decor was old and rather gloomy, good quality but way overdue for a makeover. A nice touch was not only a welcome muffin but daily chocolates and fruit.

The staff were mixed. In the lobby the reception staff were a little standoffish, and moderately competent. Despite a lengthy email exchange with the hotel's reservation office who'd confirmed room type, we were allocated the wrong room and had to traipse back down to check in again. Requests for basic tourist information and ideas were treated almost as an imposition. Check-out took over 20 minutes (not because of a queue, but to process the bill etc) which is a personal record in a long career of hotel stays. However the more menial staff (bellboy, houseboys, waiters etc) were universally cheery and helpful. We rented a hotel car and driver for a day, and were a little put out that the driver - who tried to be helpful and friendly - spoke no English (ok, I don't speak Bengali either, but then I don't work for a hotel and chaperone tourists). We were on a short leisure break so we didn't stress, but I suspect if I'd been there on busines my fuse might have been lit.

The lobby and public areas are respectable and well maintained. The gym has a great view but is in poor shape. There's one treadmill, a couple of other aerobic machines in not-too-good condition, some random free weights, and quite a good multigym standing on a deep pile carpet which I'm guessing harboured a wide spectrum of interesting life forms.

The highlight was breakfast. The Oceanic room is bright and well renovated, the selection is good, as was the service (generally) and the freshly made dosa was spectacular. Great coffee, too.

They push their in-house Bengali restaurant hard - every time we asked about nearby restaurant options we were told it was the best Bengali restaurant in town, the most famous in town, a must-dine experience. Funny that it was completely empty on a Saturday evening. We passed.

I suggest that if you're looking for an oasis in this big dusty ole' town, you take a deep breath and deal with the cost of one of the real 5* hotels. If you can't finance that, then the Peerless will work, but think mid-west business hotel - it's been a long while since it would qualify as "luxury".

The Peerless Inn is one of the best business hotels that I have stayed in. Located in the heart of Kolkata at the Esplanade, the rooms are clean and comfortable and the staff among the most courteous you can find. Don't miss the awesome view of the city and especially the Victoria Memorial from their gym.
A peerless buffet breakfast and some interesting Bengali cuisine in Aheli, their restaurant adds to the joy of the stay.

The Hotel has an excellent location.Rooms are excellent.Restaurants are simply too good and more than that the service is simply too much noticible. The hotel has an excellent gym and also a bussiness centre. The hotel wi-fi is very fast. The hotel is a perfect 4-Star deluxe property. It may not be having a swimming pool but when you are on official toyrs what good is it anyway as you rarely get the time to take a bath in it.Keeping in mind these points and aspects it better to board the Peerless rather than go for oberoi Grand or Park who just have an extra swimming pool and messaging centre and ask 1500 to 2000 bucks extra just for them.Peerless may be a little too expensive but keeping in view it's accomodation , service, location, guest reviews and room demand it is justifiable. No other option in the city can be better than this .Yes if you have lots of money to squander then you can surely go for them.

The Peerless Inn has a good location for sightseeing and the subway is just around the corner. The service is friendly and helpful, rooms are spacious, very clean and water and fruit are complimentary. The breakfast is also very good. Although we are aware of the fact that the hotel is - for Indian standards - quite expensive, we thought that the laundry service and the airport pick-up and Sealdah station drop-off were extraordinarily expensive (airport pick-up was supposed to be 1500 RS compared to 250 RS for a pre-paid taxi booked at the airport; drop-off at Sealdah train station, which is only a ten minute drive away, was 800 RS).

I have usually experienced other properties at Kolkata and had reached the conclusion that any stay in the city will always be a little average. Peerless Inn happened accidentally and it was like a breath of fresh air. Eye for detail, small meaningful gestures, very pleasant staff and an exeptional breakfast buffet made my trip quite memorable.
Only one piece of advice, they could probably remove the carpets from the rooms. Those are getting a little mouldy.
