“Central hotel with 2 restaurants”
Reviewed March 18, 2013

Stayed here for 3 night while visiting Kolkata. Hotel is centrally located and very handy for visiting most places of interest. They have 2 restaurants and the food is good. Having read other reviews, we took a taxi from the airport (pre-paid counter) and it was perfectly satisfactory. On our return to the airport, we had no problem picking up a taxi from the road outside the hotel. This was so much cheaper than using the hotel car.

My experience started with an email request to the hotel for availability being ignored but I did get a prompt response to my request for an airport pick up at a cost of Rs 2250 net. I decided to go with the airport pre-paid cab which was Rs 290.
Since the hotel was rated number 13 on tripadvisor I went ahead and booked a room on Booking.com
Arriving at 10pm there was no one to take my luggage from the taxi into the hotel. The check in process was slow and unfriendly since there were only two members of staff on duty, one was being trained by the other and with stops to constantly answer the phone I was put to the back of the queue.
When I asked why the airport pickup was 8 times the price of a normal cab I was told taxes! I was then presented with my bill since they take payment immediately which lead to my next heated discussion on why they wanted to round up my bill and they pay me back the difference on check out.
The room itself was spacious but tired, the bathroom had seen better days and there were stains on the ceiling above the shower which smelt of mold, not really a 4 star.
My other experience was the hotel bar. They have a large painted montage of movie and pop icons which then rotate to reveal a political figures montage. Right next to Margaret Thatcher taking centre stage was Adolf Hitler staring down at me. Not something I’ve come across before while sipping on my Kingfisher and munching my complimentary peanuts.
Their excessive pricing policy reappeared again with the arrival of my bill. Usually a large Kingfisher is between Rs 160 to Rs 250 in hotels and restaurants going up to Rs 375 in a 5 star but here it was Rs 472!
This did explain why on a Saturday night there was not a single person in the bar. It seems there are many corporate guests here who don’t actually pay the bill themselves so unless you’re on expenses there are many more reasonable hotels in this area.

Room Tip: Rooms on the north side have front row to the nearby bus station loud speakers which start at 6:30am...

i was actually quite surprised with this hotel. the rooms were good and even though i wasn't there during the days since i was out on work but i used to order room service in the evenings and was pleasantly surprised at the promptness of their service and the quality of their food. it was quite a good and comfortable stay and i had good experiences with the staff, bar one at the breakfast buffet, but even that was not so bad that i would write about it here in detail...i do agree with some people who say the hotel is up for renovation now and saw in a comment from the hotel manager that they are actually planning one...i do hope they also include the gym in that and upgrade the equipment as well...all in all a good value hotel

This is a reasonably modern hotel in the centre of town. Security to get in was tight with guests being electronically frisked and all bags x-rayed. Check-in was fast and efficient. Our suite was enormous and quite comfortable although it perhaps had a slight smoking smell. The sitting area had a large table, chairs and a settee with its own mini-bar. The bathroom was a little old but had all that one would need. Water pressure was strong and the hot water temperature did not need cold water to cool it down for a good shower. The bed was very large and comfortable, the desk size reasonable and there were comfortable chairs in the bedroom. The wardrobe was large with hangers and a safe (which I could not get to work). I could not work out how to get any TV channels other than a few music channels. There is no guide to the hotel (other than a list of facilities and a room service menu) nor a guide to the surrounding area nor to Calcutta although reception quickly provided a badly photocopied map on request. Tea making facilities are provided and although we had the impression (from the paperwork in the room) that we had to pay for each tea and milk consumed (27 rupees), we were not charged for this when we checked out. Two complimentary half litre bottles of water were provided each day which were not really sufficient. Despite the double glazing, noise from the busy streets outside could be heard and on both mornings we were woken around 5 am by loudspeakers outside – perhaps in the bus station, we were never too sure. The air-con was very effective. We ate in both restaurants and in both cases the food was reasonable and efficiently served – somewhat expensive however. We also drank in the bar, the beer was a quite warm, mid-priced as far as our experiences in India go but quickly served with free nuts and crisps. The free WIFI was very fast and there was a good signal in our room – occasionally it switched off and we had to ask for the routers to be reset but it was a delight to have it. Breakfast was ok – we have had far worse and sometimes a little better elsewhere. Checkout was efficient and accurate. Staff were courteous and friendly throughout our stay. We would stay here again without reservation if we were to be in town again because it provides all that one might need and the staff are good.

Room Tip: Try to avoid rooms overlooking the street

Walking into The Peerless Inn at Kolkata gives you a feeling of the old world star hotels. The hotel is located at an extremely crowded place and there is constant noise 24 x 7. The reception at the hotel was warm, they provide you a muffin as soon as you come in. Maybe because I checked in pretty late in the evening, there were no standard rooms and hence I was upgraded to the Presidential Suite at the same price. It was a big room, with a living area facing the Howrah Bridge, with old world chairs and a center table and a dinning table. Surprisingly there was no TV in the living room - kind of strange! The bed room was also large enough but didn't give you that class feeling. The aura around was that of a typical government run hotel frequented by ministers and government officials. Yes the rooms were clean and well maintained.

The bathroom had a bath tub, and taps, which needed urgent refurbishing - I stayed there for 3 nights but just couldn't get the combination of hot & cold correct! On day 2 the housekeeping forgot took away used towels but forgot to keep the new :)

The food at the hotel was expensive - the room service menu wasn't quite exhaustive but was expensive for what it was worth. The food was decent but didn't deserve to cost so much.

The breakfast menu was also quite same all 3 days - didn't really provide any local taste to the cuisine - something one would expect when traveling to a different city. South Indian dishes, cereals, parathas and eggs dominated the breakfast menu.

All in all, I would say this property needs urgent refurbishing in order to bring about a certain class in the hotel. At present those who enjoy the good old world charm can enjoy the stay there.

Room Tip: Always ask for a room on the higher floor and possibly facing the Howrah Bridge. At least the mornin...
