The Fairlawn Hotel is an old mansion changed into a hotel. It is outstanding for the adventurous and those wanting to experience Kolkata 24/7. Going to your room you walk through the original dinning room and sitting room from ca.1910 with its old furniture and glass cases filled with stuff collected by the owners. Outside is a large covered terrace that is packed at night with locals on dates or in same-sex groups. The beer is good and is cold. The bathrooms are large enough but the fixtures are ca.1940's. We talked to the wife of the original owner, she is 95 and Armenian. The whole place is great in it's authenticity and individuality.

Had a great 3 night stay here, good size rooms and tranquill surroundings amid bedlam of city!

Comfortable beds, good food but decor very green!

Worth a visit if I area, would happily recommend and stay again.

I first walked throught the gates of the Fairlawn in 1979, came back in 1982 and returned once again in 2012 and for the most part the place hasn't changed!
My last trip found my girl;friend and I celebrating Misses Smith’s birthday (I believe she’s been running the hotel since 1939). I love the old colonial feel of this place which has a great location. Rooms are basic but are airy and large. Beer is cold though anything but breakfast should be avoided.
One of the big selling points is the Manager Sam. He was incredibly in finding us a room when we landed on his doorsteps without a reservation, not once but twice. Sam’s your man behind the desk!

This old Kolkata institution is highly eccentric, immaculately clean and has everything you need in the way of functional baths, comfy beds and pleasant friendly staff. The location could not be better; it is right around the corner from the venerable Indian Museum and walking distance from Park St and the New Market.

Room Tip: Each room is a bit different.

Very very warm and gentle people. Nice hotel in a busy district of Calcutta ... a place, that you never forget, that you visited. The hotel staff is helpfull, frindly and very effectice (indian scale :-)) A positive meeting with an old colonial style hotel... a nice beer garden, and a restaurant with OK food ... glad is was ther over two periods. Visits nearby Motherhouse and victoria memorial is MUST SEEs ... and yes, we will be back again some day

Stepping into the Fairlawn Hotel is like going to stay at a grandma's place. The stairs and sitting rooms are decorated with photos and newspaper clippings relating to the hotel’s nonagenarian owner Mrs Violet Smith, her family and famous guests. There are floral curtains, books and mementoes everywhere. Our room and bathroom were basic but spacious and we even had an old painted stainless steel bathtub. Every morning the charming and witty Mrs Smith sits in the leafy green courtyard at the front of the hotel reading the newspaper with a magnifying glass and chats to various staff and guests.

The breakfasts at the Fairlawn Hotel are very substantial - coffee or tea, fresh fruit, cornflakes or porridge, eggs cooked to order, baked beans, mushrooms, tomatoes, chips and toast with butter and marmalade.

We did think actually about moving and looked at a few hotels around the area. The only places that we would consider moving to were a little more expensive. Then we decided that we should stay at the Fairlawn as you can stay in a modern hotel anywhere in the world, and we would probably never have the opportunity to stay in such a characterful hotel ever again.

I researched this place & had high hopes that it might resemble a West Bengal version of the Algonquin in NYC or perhaps the Grand Hotel Oloffson in Port-au-Prince, Haiti but alas, it did not even had the "faded charm" I envisoned. I have stayed at many quirky hotels around the world but the Fairlawn is in need of more than just a mild makeover. While many of the guests seem lifted from some novel & come with interesting stories about their connection to the Fairlawn, the hotel seems musty in the extreme rather than merely full of nostalgic remnants of a bygone era, while the staff seemed hardly very welcoming. Beyond that, my first floor room was dismal & there was trash in the common areas, including the fabled garden, with many staff members just standing about in the shadows. I have to confess that I arrived in the midst of what appeared to be a considerable bout of labor unrest at the hotel, with that morning's breakfast postponed & then cancelled when the staff refused to man their stations following a protest in the lobby by a local union contingent and a loudly shouting spokesman, attempting to intervene on behalf of a disciplined hotel worker who had apparently became involved with one of the female guests, who later protested to the management. Such things can & do happen but the hotel staff seemed well beyond being able to deal with the situation, which seemed on the verge of becoming violent. The remarkable owner, Mrs. Smith, was no where to be seen through all of this. Luckily, I found a nearby alternative that was clean, peaceful & welcoming.
