Have stayed here on 4 separate occasions and will return there on next trip. This is a very dignified establishment on "colorful" Sudder Street. This area is not for the faint-hearted, but then neither is Calcutta generally, but have never felt unsafe strolling in this area. Still run by the legendary Mrs. Smith, the place is a direct link with the colonial past. Great value, bustling bar-restaurant in the courtyard, hearty English-style breakfast and incredibly helpful, friendly staff. But come for the atmosphere.

Room Tip: Best to sleep on higher floors, rooms near the restaurant get a bit noisy in the morning.

We lucked out and were able to get a room for 6 nights here while I volunteered at Mother Teresa's. We stayed in Kolkata for 2 weeks total and this was my favourite by far, homey atmosphere, Violet has made it that way, great friendly and honest staff who get to know you and your quirks. We loveed staying here, but book early as so many people are dissapointed, breakfast is excellent. Next time I would ask for an upstairs room. Rooms are very clean and cleaned every day without being asked. If you like atmosphere and meeting other travellers, this is the place for you.

Room Tip: Upstairs room is where I would request next time, book very early

My wife and I were meeting a group of friends in Kolkata who were planning to stay at the Park Hotel, and we decided to get to the city a day earlier and stay in a different venue for one night, The decision was an excellent one, as we enjoyed Fairlawn immensely. The staff was friendly and helpful, and the hotel is well-located and priced. It was a bit like moving back in time, given all the unusual photographic and related artwork on the walls. We found the food to be fine, and ate at both the garden and the inside restaurant. Our room was very clean, the water very hot, and we had no complaints whatsoever. We will definitely return if we are back in Kolkata, and urge you to give serious consideration to Fairlawn when you next visit the city.

I would rate the accommodation highly for the amount charged. Our room was clean, comfortable and quiet during the night. The whole hotel has character and the reception staff helpful and friendly. The hotel is let down by its restaurant. We were advised by a couple of other guests that the food was poor so we didn't try it. I was looking forward to a cooked breakfast but both mornings it was lukewarm with the tomato uncooked and neither bacon nor sausages served. The coffee served was of a poor quality. The afternoon tea, however, was good and a lovely touch after a day out.

A really charming place, I liked the atmosphere. It is much more personal than one of the modern, faceless places. A bit overpriced, rooms are nothing special, but clean and ok, old-fashioned (even the ac). The stairways and halls are a real museum and show you the history of this place, every centimeter covered with photos, newspapers etc.

I really liked the (beer-)garden. Places like this are not easy to find in Kolkata. But take care of the birds ;) Food is not the best, it's delivered from an outside restaurant and there are better places for dinner in the surroundings. Breakfast served is wonderful.

Believe the reviews. It's quirky, good value, fun and feels like being in someone's house, not a hotel. Violet Smith is a hoot and Sam on reception is a star. Nothing too much trouble.

Bear in mind the location and get a room on the inside of the main building. Initially, we had Room 21, which as on Madge Lane and VERY noisy - didn't sleep. But when we changed to Room 2, all was well - quiet and calm.

We were there for Violet's 92nd birthday and were invited for drinks and snacks in her private apartment just off the landing. The Smith family was in attendance, as were other guests. Try and get that at another hotel...

Highly recommended.

Room Tip: Avoid the periphery of the hotel and get a 'central' room in the main building. Room 2 was i...

We stayed at the Fairlawn from December 22 , 2012, until December 26. It is everything its publicity promises. Christmas dinner was a real hoot. It didn't matter that the turkey and ham were of rather indifferent quality because the party was great with the matriach, Violet Smith, holding court. The hotel itself is an oasis of calm in the chaos of Calcutta (kolkata)...it oozes old charm and there's more than just a whiff of the Raj about the place. The beds ( we travelled with another couple) are comfortable; the rooms were quite large and the plumbing worked. It isn't 5 star by any means but easily beats places like the Oberoi hands down on style. Who wants to stay in a shrink-wrapped, over-priced soul-less 5 star joint where you could be anywhere in the world when a place like the Fairlawn is avgailable. And it's so central to everything that Calcutta has to offer. The food at the Fairlawn isn't the best, although breakfasts are quite acceptable. To eat well you just have to walk down the street a couple of hundred metres to find one of Calcutta's best eateries...the Zaranj which is well worth a visit. Overall, the positives of the Fairlawn with its history and old-fashioned style far outweigh its negatives.

Room Tip: Rooms that don't have direct access to the common upstairs sitting room have more privacy.
