An interesting and charming hotel, with original features such as stained glass, wooden banisters, marble floors (these in the common areas) and excellent service at reception - staff regularly fielded multiple queries from guests, both individual and groups, helpfully, speedily and politely.

You soon realised that asking reception would produce a useful, positive response – very reassuring. From other hotels we visited in our quest for a room, this was typically not the case in Sudder Street. In fact one reason we settled on the Lytton, despite the price, was its professional front desk. Their quiet competence, business-like approach and politeness was a key factor in our 'very good' rating of the Lytton.

Rooms vary in size – ours was spacious with a small sofa and view of a nearby colonial building but another we were shown was smaller and looked onto the wall of another building, and thus felt rather claustrophobic. We really appreciated being offered our room with a view.
The bathroom was new, with plenty of hot water (sometimes it needed to run for a few minutes). Even better if the accumulated drain debris had been cleared so you didn’t feel as if showering in a paddling pool!

This was the only disappointment of the Lytton – cleanliness of parts of the rooms. The bedroom floor (and rug) was filthy (not to mention darker recesses, the light switches and the phone). This appeared to be a combination of inadequate or non-existent cleaning and the practice of leaving the windows open, blowing in Kolkata’s dust and grime. We know this because after two requests to clean the floor (beyond a quick sweep), the following day the windows had been opened – consequently our feet were soon blackened. A perplexing irony then to see outside staff assiduously washing the parking lot each morning! The cleanliness issue was particularly irksome as the Lytton is not cheap (we paid 5,900R). The neighbouring Fairlawn, where we stayed prior, had much better cleaners (3700R).

That aside, the Lytton is recommended, due to the excellent reception and its charm, redolent of another era. This is increasingly rare in Sudder Street where new hotels seemingly vie for ever more modern/minimalist interiors – faux leather, glass tables and full length windows are no match for Kolkata’s dust!

Other Lytton plusses: generous breakfast of great variety (lovely custard apples!), foreign exchange (including travellers’ cheques – a lifesaver when ATMs didn’t work), good value and rapidly arrranged airport taxi, and lovely masala chai at 4.30am when we had the misfortune to be departing!

Room Tip: Ask for one at the side or front - not the rear where may be slap bang opposite a wall.

One of oldest hotel around....
One thing I would like to share...."avoid old hotels"......
Limited parking space...
Food ok...
Staff noisy...
View from room is mood depressing...
Infact I found it in most of the calcutta's hotels..
Good point is the locality....

This a good, clean hotel in a great location. You have to pay for wifi and it is quite slow. The rooms at the front are a bit noisy. The are good bars and restaurants nearby and you can walk to most the sites.

Room Tip: Get a room at the back if you can

The hotel is the right place at right budget and at the very hart of the Kolkata. Close to all the markets, offices and purchases Tourists it is the place to stay. Rooms are neat. Bath rooms are good. Room service is fine. The food is nice.

How should I rate this hotel.. besides being situated in the heart of Kolkata (on the congested and overcrowded Sudder street) where you may get almost all the things of your requirements nearby, nothing impressed me. Reception is in a differed building, the rooms are in other (no direction mark, I had to ask a few hotel personnel the way to room). Even after entering the building it was a task to find out the room. It seems to be an old residential building subsequently converted to a hotel.

Rooms are small and view outside (practically no view outside) is of some old construction only. Bathroom and quality of toileteris however were acceptable. Food was ok and staff behaviour satisfactory.

Will I ever be interested in coming again ... certainly not.
